Ascending from Nafs-i Emir to Tawhid

The teachings of Ahmed Yesevi emphasize the importance of a human’s inner world being cleansed of egos and ascending to the level of tawhid (oneness with God). The concept of ‘tecrid-tefrid’ mentioned in the source text expresses a person detaching from themselves, separating from the world and worldly ambitions. This separation also brings with it the necessity of Mustafa’s words regarding the requirement of action (implementation). For in a spiritual journey, knowledge alone is not sufficient; it must be supported by action. Repentance (tawba) is the cornerstone of this purification process. However, repentance must be sincere and continuous, for without ‘zar’ (pain, sorrow), a true connection with God cannot be established.

Discovering the Spiritual Gem Through Friendship

In Yesevi thought, friendship is an indispensable element for spiritual development. The expression ‘friends’ represents respect and devotion to spiritual guides, scholars, and righteous individuals. These people help a person reveal the hidden gems within themselves. However, obtaining this gem is not easy; it requires enduring ‘cefa’ (wrongdoing), undergoing ‘mihnet’ (trials), and serving others. The journey to attain truth can be challenging, but it can be overcome with patience and perseverance. Progressing on this path without a pir (spiritual guide) is not possible, for he is a compass showing the right way.

Love and Truth: The Two Faces of the Journey

The concept of love (muhabbet) lies at the heart of Yesevi’s teachings. Love is not only about loving God but also seeing the manifestations of God in all creation. This love softens hearts and draws a person into the sea of Truth. However, to avoid drowning in this sea, one must be purified through ‘tawba’ (repentance) and strengthened by ‘zikrullah’ (remembrance of God). On the path to truth, it is important to follow the footsteps of the enlightened ones, learn manners and etiquette. Otherwise, one deviates from the spiritual path and distances oneself from the truth. Yesevi announces that closeness to God is possible at the end of this long and arduous journey.
