The Confusion of Various Paths and the Oneness of Truth
Passages from Jalaluddin Rumi’s Masnavi strikingly reveal humanity’s effort to embrace different belief and thought systems. The Snares of the Ego and Submission to Divine Existence
Rumi draws attention to the snares of the ego in his work. He states that a person who cannot balance between this world and the hereafter and is constantly searching for different approaches, is essentially deceiving themselves. The vizier’s interpretation of biblical verses according to his own interests and attempts to manipulate various communities reveal the dark side of the ego. True salvation comes from transcending all opposites and surrendering to divine existence; this is possible not through ‘tawassul-efkal’ (openness to different opinions) but by turning towards the essence of truth.
Seeing the Unseen: Symbolism in the Quest for Truth
The symbols and metaphors used by Rumi possess profound meanings that machine learning algorithms cannot capture. Images such as fish swimming in water, the effect of light emanating from a candle, and the relationship between earth and sky, actually represent different manifestations of truth. Seeing the reality beyond what the eye sees is possible only through transcending reason and purifying the heart. Rumi’s advice is to recognize the unity underlying apparent diversity and, with this understanding, to progress on the path of divine love with true submission; this can only be achieved through sincerity and humility.
