The Eye’s Radiance, The Heart’s Illumination
While embarking on a spiritual journey illuminated by the teachings of Mevlânâ Celaleddin Rumi, we see that understanding truth is possible only through the enlightenment of our hearts with light (Nûr). Just as our eyes need a spark of sight to benefit from the sun’s radiance, so too must we possess an inner awareness and understanding in order to penetrate the depths of spirituality. This light is nourished by the words of the gnostics, permeates the essence of our heart, and truly illuminates us. The equipping of the heart with this light enables us to overcome worldly darkness and becomes a compass guiding us towards truth.
Divine Grace: Adorning and Protecting the Heart
The greatest need in the spiritual journey is to desire divine grace and to cultivate it within our hearts. As Mevlânâ expresses, each heart should be adorned with beautiful fragrances like a rose garden and equipped with the ability to consider the end of things. This also involves protecting ourselves from the negative influences of our ego; being cleansed of doubts, envy, and harboring resentment. The greatest duty of the spiritual traveler is to remain distant from ostentation and hypocrisy while seeking truth, and to turn only towards Allah. This grace protects us from satanic influences and illuminates the right path.
Beginning in the Name of God: Seeking Assistance When Needed
Another important point frequently emphasized in Mevlânâ’s works is the significance of beginning every endeavor in the name of God. This is not merely a ritualistic requirement, but also a spiritual shield. As our Prophet (peace be upon him) said, every beneficial work that does not begin in the name of God will eventually come to an end. The downfall of Pharaoh and the failure of Nimrod are concrete examples of this truth. When presenting our requests in times of need, invoking God’s name and seeking refuge provides ease for the acceptance of our prayers and protects us from potential errors. This is not just a beginning but also our guide throughout our journey.
