Hadith
It is narrated from Abu Zar that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There are three types of people with whom Allah, Exalted and Glorious, will not speak on the Day of Judgment, nor look at them, nor purify them. For them is a painful torment.” The narrator says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this statement three times. Upon that, Abu Zar said: “They have perished and suffered loss; who are they, O Messenger of Allah?” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “It is the person who drags the hem of his garment, shows off good deeds, and swears falsely in trade.”
In another narration by Muslim: “The one who trails his robe” is mentioned.

What We Learn
- 1Arrogance and conceit show themselves not only in a person’s inner world but also in their behavior and attire. Dragging the hem of one’s garment to the extent that it trails is one of the signs of this.
- 2Flaunting good deeds is a behavior that Allah does not approve of and is considered a major sin. There is a spiritual torment in this behavior towards others.
- 3False swearing is forbidden and a major sin, regardless of the reason. False oaths made to exaggerate the value of trade goods beyond their actual price are an even greater sin because they involve trespassing on another’s rights.
- 4Those who commit major sins will remain in Hell until they experience the punishment for those sins.
