Transcending the Self
Sufism is a profound teaching that aims for the integration of the individual with their Lord by transcending themselves. As seen in the works of Abd al-Qadir al-Geylani, this journey begins primarily with purification from the *nafs-i emmare*, which is the part of the self that causes one to be driven by worldly desires. This purification process means leaving behind all passions, whims, and worldliness; thus creating the possibility of turning towards God. This state of annihilation not only involves giving up worldly desires but also freeing oneself from will and desire; thereby allowing the heart to begin filling with the light of God.
Reaching *Wahdat al-Fana* Through Divine Love
Annihilating the ego is a process that molds the individual with divine love. This love is so deep that all other feelings in the heart are erased, and only the love of the Lord remains. With the purification of the heart, the individual approaches God, merges with Him, and is endowed with divine grace. Allah, the Exalted, chooses the servant worthy of this love, prefers them, and bestows upon them the ability to be loved by His creation as He loves them. This grace opens a constant door of mercy in the person’s life; thus making it possible for them to attain happiness in this world and the hereafter.
The Stability of Fate and Submission to God
From a Sufi perspective, fate is the decree of one’s Lord. Instead of questioning this decree, one must accept it with devotion and proceed along the path He has drawn. As emphasized in the works of al-Geylani, the waves of fate can carry a person in different directions; but the most important thing is to seek refuge in God rather than being swept away by these waves. The work of the saints is the beginning of the work of the prophets, and the ultimate goal is to reach the station of prophethood. Therefore, one should avoid discussions about fate, be content with the Lord’s decree, thank Him for His blessings, and face suffering with patience; thus the individual attains God’s pleasure and submits to His command.
