The Dominance of Reason and the Importance of Knowledge
The path to liberation from the dominance of egoistic desires and anger within a person’s inner world lies in utilizing reason as reason. As emphasized in the works of Imam Ghazali, when we bring our rational faculty – possessing divine attributes – under control, the ability to grasp knowledge, wisdom, and truth blossoms in our heart. This is not limited to merely acquiring information but also signifies the ability to correctly interpret, understand, and apply that knowledge to our lives. With the perfection of knowledge, we are freed from the servitude of worldly desires, turning towards a more peaceful, just, and virtuous life; thus, knowledge and insight guide us on the right path.
The Mirror of the Heart: The Reflection of Beautiful Morals
Our heart is a mirror reflecting the moral qualities within our inner world. As Ghazali points out, when beautiful traits become guests in our hearts, that mirror shines and becomes more beautiful. This radiance not only contributes to our individual peace but also has a positive impact on those around us. Virtues such as honesty, contentment, generosity, patience, and tolerance emerge with the illumination of the heart and give meaning to our lives; each is an important element supporting our inner wholeness.
Darkening the Heart: The Marks of Sin
Sin, however, is like rust that darkens this mirror. Every time we commit a sin, the lights in our heart extinguish and are replaced by darkness. This not only disrupts the peace within our inner world but also weakens our ability to see the truth. Repentance is an opportunity to erase this rust and regain the radiance of the heart; however, continuing to sin constantly darkens the heart, leading it to blindness and forgetfulness of the afterlife. This, in turn, leads to negative consequences such as excessive attachment to worldly life and neglect of spiritual values.
