The Importance of Detachment from Worldly Desires
Within the complexities of life, divine messages that guide humanity manifest through various paths. A profound understanding gained from the works of Imam Ghazali emphasizes that individuals preoccupied with worldly pursuits cannot perceive truth and inevitably neglect the afterlife. This signifies that a person’s preoccupation with worldly affairs hinders spiritual development; therefore, distancing oneself from worldly concerns is essential for spiritual progress.
Distinguishing Inspiration (Ilham) and Ijtihad in Acquiring Knowledge
Acquiring knowledge has different avenues: Some diligently learn sciences, building them upon evidence; others are endowed with knowledge through an internal experience, of uncertain origin. As Ghazali states, knowledge obtained through evidence is termed ‘ijtihad,’ while the internal knowledge of unknown origin is called ‘ilham.’ Ilham is a divine effulgence emanating from the depths of the heart; these sciences can sometimes be attained by appearing in angelic form, and at other times reach the heart secretly. These differences demonstrate the diversity of ways to acquire knowledge and highlight the unique value of each method.
The Heart’s Potential for Perceiving Truth and Its Obstacles
The human heart possesses a unique potential to perceive the truths of the universe. However, realizing this potential can encounter various obstacles. Certain factors, acting as a veil between the heart and the source of divine revelation, make it difficult to see the truth. This veil creates impediments in front of the reflection from the mirror of the Preserved Tablet (Lawh-i Mahfuz), which contains the records of Allah’s decreed events, onto the heart’s mirror; but through divine grace and winds, this veil can open and inspirations can reach the heart. Death serves as a means for this veil to be completely lifted, while even in wakefulness, knowledge can be gained through discovery with Allah’s special blessing.
