Sacred Responsibility in Family Relationships
In Islamic morality, respect and obedience to parents is one of the most fundamental responsibilities. As emphasized in the hadiths (sayings) of our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), pleasing parents is an important way to attain the pleasure of our Lord. This goes beyond simply meeting their material needs; it also involves touching their emotional and spiritual worlds, showing them compassion, and approaching them with respect. In some cases, acts of kindness towards parents can be as valuable as obligatory worship (fard), clearly demonstrating how sacred family bonds are in Islam.
Priority of Service: Serving Parents
While going to jihad (holy war) and fighting for Allah is an important duty in Islam, obtaining the consent of one’s parents and doing good to them takes precedence before undertaking this task. Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was reported to have asked the first question of someone going to jihad: ‘Do you have a mother or father?’ This demonstrates that even fighting for Allah’s path cannot supersede familial responsibilities. Serving one’s parents, ensuring their happiness, is among the most valuable deeds in Islam and may take precedence over going to jihad.
Limits of Obedience: Priority of Obedience to God
While obedience to parents is important, it is not absolute. If a parent commands something contrary to Allah’s commandments or forces one to abandon worship (ibadah), then the limit of obedience is drawn. Islamic morality teaches that a servant’s responsibility to their Lord is superior to worldly relationships. Therefore, even the requests of parents should not be fulfilled if they contradict what Allah has forbidden or commanded. However, even in this situation, it is important to remain respectful and gentle towards them; explaining the situation with understanding is more appropriate than showing an immediate reaction.
