Allah’s Mercy and the Importance of Repentance
As compiled from the works of Abdülkadir Geylânî, Allah is a Most Merciful Lord who encompasses those who repent with His mercy and forgives sins. This carries a hopeful message that meets a fundamental human need; for we are all prone to error, and the door of repentance is always open. Rather than imprisoning us in feelings of guilt and despair, Allah’s mercy encourages us to learn from our mistakes and progress towards becoming better people. True repentance is not just a verbal confession but also includes sincere remorse and correcting wrongful behaviors; thus we find peace within ourselves and can build healthier relationships with those around us.
The Example of the Prophets: The Combination of Repentance and Gratitude
Throughout history, prophets have exemplified perfect examples of repentance and gratitude. Events such as Noah’s sincere supplication after the destruction of his people, Abraham’s deep friendship with Allah, and Solomon’s learning from his mistakes demonstrate that repentance is not only an act of seeking forgiveness but also a way of gratitude and learning. Moses’ seeking refuge in his Lord, David’s weeping for his sins, and Solomon’s story of regaining what he lost clearly show that repentance triggers inner transformation and matures the person. These examples guide us on our spiritual journey, reminding us to learn from our mistakes rather than being ashamed of them.
Inner Wealth and Spiritual Emptiness
Nowadays, many people observe outward acts of worship while feeling religious but are filled with emptiness within. It is important to fulfill obligatory duties such as prayer, fasting, and charity; however, what is truly important is the purification of the heart, possessing piety (taqwa), and drawing closer to Allah. Virtues such as sincerity, patience, acceptance, and resignation enrich our inner world while distancing us from worldly desires. Instead of being deceived by Satan’s whispers and falling into a desire for showiness, we should turn to Allah and strive to earn His pleasure. We must remember that true religiosity is shaped not only by outward appearance but also by inner intentions and actions; therefore, we must constantly strive towards spiritual maturity.
