The Necessity and Meaning of Repentance
Repentance, one of the fundamental pillars of Islamic morality, is not merely an expression of regret but also the beginning of a person’s inner transformation. As emphasized in the works of Al-Ghazali, repentance is indispensable for progressing on the path to happiness and salvation; because performing good deeds or avoiding bad ones is possible through repentance. To consider whether an action falls within one’s own responsibility is, in essence, to question whether that action has meaning or not. If an action leads to endless bliss, it is obligatory to engage with it; otherwise, there is no point in focusing on such an action.
Abandoning the Self and Turning Towards Allah
The essence of repentance lies in freeing oneself from the clutches of selfish desires and turning towards divine mercy. The transient pleasures and false relationships of this world distance a person from Allah. What truly purifies the heart and connects it to the Lord is detaching from worldly beauties and grasping the true meaning of existence. Satanic whispers and sins are obstacles on this path; however, these obstacles can be overcome with knowledge, breath (spiritual practice), and perseverance. For the person who does not learn from the pain caused by disobedience continues to repeat the same mistakes and misses the true meaning of repentance. Therefore, repentance must be made with a sincere intention and effort should be made to compensate for past mistakes.
The Virtues of Repentance and Allah’s Mercy
The example set by our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and previous prophets clearly demonstrates the virtues of repentance. Allah, the Exalted, loves and has mercy on His servant who repents. The joy of a person whose repentance is accepted is likened to the indescribable happiness felt by a desert traveler finding his lost food and camel. Even the repentance of Adam (peace be upon him) was met with divine mercy and left him a legacy to be passed down to future generations. Allah’s mercy is boundless; He provides a door for repentance, and He accepts repentances. Therefore, despite the weight of past mistakes, hope should not be lost, and we must always open the door of repentance.
