The Value of Fasting: The Meaning of Itikaf
Itikaf, a process dedicated to spiritual purification in Islam, is a special act of worship aimed at bringing the individual closer to Allah. According to what we understand from the works of Abdülkadir Geylani (may Allah be pleased with him), itikaf is more than just physical separation; it’s about detaching the heart from worldly ties and directing one’s entire being towards the Creator. Fasting during itikaf is of great importance in terms of disciplining the nafs (ego) and curbing worldly ambitions, because a state of hunger helps a person to control themselves more easily and progress on a spiritual level. Therefore, itikaf provides an ideal environment for the individual to turn inward, repent, pray, and turn towards their Lord.
The Conditions of Itikaf and Recommended Practices
As mentioned in Geylani’s works, itikaf is generally performed in places of worship such as mosques; among the most superior locations are those where Friday prayers are held, and it expresses an intention that can be done while fasting. Engaging in acts such as reading the Quran, reciting tasbihat (dhikr), reflecting, and remembering Allah enriches the spirit of the act of worship. Similarly, staying away from worldly conversations, unnecessary tasks, and things that distract the heart increases the blessings of itikaf. It is also approved for the person observing itikaf to engage in acts that benefit others, such as giving lessons or teaching the Quran; because this both earns reward and is superior to being preoccupied with one’s own nafs.
The Hajj Journey and Farewell to Medina
Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam, is an important act of worship that every Muslim with the means should perform. Geylani’s works emphasize the conditions and importance of the Hajj journey; he states that a person must be materially and spiritually prepared. Visiting the Blessed Medina (Medine-i Münevvere) is one of the most valuable places in the Islamic geography. The prayers recited and ceremonies performed during the visit to the tomb of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) deeply affect the heart of the believer; it is done with the intention of seeking forgiveness from Allah and following the Sunnah. This visit is also considered a demonstration of devotion to our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
