Shams’s Disappearance and Rumi’s Quest
The sudden disappearance of Sharaf al-Din Muhammad (known as Shams) from Jalaluddin Rumi’s life marks the beginning of a profound transformation for him. Historical records indicate that Shams vanished unexpectedly, prompting Rumi to embark on lengthy journeys in search of him. This quest was not merely a physical exploration but also signified deep introspection and spiritual maturation within Rumi’s inner world. Shams’s absence served as a catalyst for Rumi’s experience of the Divine and the creation of timeless works such as the Masnavi, emphasizing humanity’s resilience in the face of loss and the importance of spiritual seeking.
The Chain of Spiritual Successors: Those Carrying on Shams’s Legacy
A significant role in the dissemination of Rumi’s teachings was played by his chosen successors and spiritual heirs (veiled). Having received the divine grace of Sharaf al-Din Muhammad, Rumi ensured that those who followed him would also draw inspiration from Shams and consider him a guide on their path. Figures such as Bahaddin Muhammed Veled, Çelebi Husameddin, and Salâhaddin formed Rumi’s spiritual family, carrying his teachings to future generations. This chain of successors not only transmitted knowledge but also embodied the living representation of Rumi’s philosophy based on love, tolerance, and human compassion.
Salahuddin Feridun: The Image of Shams
One of the individuals to whom Rumi entrusted the legacy of Shams is Salahuddin Feridun, a figure imbued with special meaning by Rumi. Having moved from his village to Konya and working as a jeweler, Salahuddin exhibited exemplary submission after meeting Rumi and listening to his sermons. According to Sultan Veled, Salahuddin, regarded by Rumi as being Shams himself, served as a guide for followers and played an important role in spreading Rumi’s teachings. This demonstrates that Rumi believed not only individual beings but also symbolic figures could contribute to spiritual growth, reinforcing the concept of human unity and universal love.
