The Path of Poets and Rumi’s Distinctiveness
While the literary talents, mastery of language, and modes of expression of past poets in Persian literature are worthy of admiration, each possesses unique characteristics. Although poets share common points, a comparative perspective is essential to understanding Rumi’s distinctness. Rumi not only possessed a level of spiritual ecstasy (Sufi fervor) exceeding that of his contemporaries but also offered a broader view of humanity and a profound understanding. His reality carries a weight that other poets could not reach; this is what makes him unique.
Rumi’s Poetic Depth: Like a Universe
Rumi’s poetry is not merely an artifact composed of words but rather a reflection of the universe. He wrote with a broad perspective encompassing all segments of society, like Attar; however, Rumi enriched this understanding with his own unique interpretation. His poems are a constantly renewing universe that connects past and future. In this universe, all beings exist as parts, each representing an aspect of the cosmos; yet Rumi himself is a center encompassing the entirety of this universe. Rumi’s works offer unparalleled guidance in humanity’s quest for meaning.
Unity and Completeness in Poetry: Rumi’s Method
In classical Eastern literature, couplets often carry independent meanings and are not directly connected to others. However, Rumi transcended this tradition in his poetry. Each of his poems is a holistic deduction (tüm) starting with the first couplet and following the same idea until the end. This has enabled Rumi to express his thoughts more consistently and profoundly; it is also an important tool for understanding his works. Even those who claim that Mesnevi represents the essence have paid attention to this concept of completeness, as each poem is based on an event, develops an idea, and defends a thesis. Rumi’s approach forms the foundation of the inspiration he offers humanity.
Rumi’s Legacy: Translated Works and Those Remaining Incomplete
Rumi’s Mesnevi has been translated into many languages, countless commentaries have been written on it, and anthologies have been created. However, the Divan-i Kabir has not received the attention it deserves. Some poems included in existing anthologies may not belong to Rumi; this compromises the integrity of the work. Therefore, creating a comprehensive anthology that accurately represents Rumi’s works is essential. A selection of rose poems containing two hundred eighty poems published under the name Gil-deste is an important step, but the publication of the complete Divan-i Kabir along with its original text is necessary so that Rumi’s universal legacy can be fully understood and appreciated.
