For God’s Sake or With Him? The Fundamental Distinction in Love
Love, one of the cornerstones of Islamic ethics, can be interpreted from different perspectives. As emphasized in the works of Abd al-Qadir al-Geylani (may Allah be pleased with him), there is a significant distinction between ‘loving for God’ and ‘loving alongside God.’ Those who possess the belief in Tawhid (the oneness of God) and sincerity view the world through a lens infused with divine love, embracing those they love for the sake of God alone, without associating anything else with Him. However, the approach of polytheists (Mushriks) is different; they nurture an additional affection for other entities alongside their love for God, as if acquiring partners to God, which contradicts the belief in Tawhid and indicates a deviation from Islam’s fundamental principles. Therefore, understanding this distinction is a necessity for sincere faith.
The Fitrah of Creation and Freedom of Will: Responsibility and Righteousness
Every human being possesses certain inclinations by nature. This innate disposition (Fitrah) can manifest as loving some things and hating others. However, freedom of will also holds an important place in Islam. Although humans may have different orientations due to their creation, it is possible to progress on the right path by obeying God’s command. Sharia (Islamic law) commands the servant to desire certain things and disapprove of others; this is a principle that supports human responsibility and moral development. As our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stated, every child is born with a pure disposition (Fitrah), and has the potential to be influenced by their environment and incline towards different beliefs; therefore, through proper guidance and education, it is aimed for individuals to grow up with an ethical character in accordance with the true Fitrah created by God. This highlights the importance of being aware of one’s innate tendencies and acting under the guidance of Sharia.
Hanifism: Dedication to God and the Sincerity of Worship
Hanifism expresses the essence of Islamic belief. To be a Hanif means to dedicate religion solely to God, to turn towards Him. This is about placing divine love in hearts and submitting to Him; but it is not associating anything with this love and devotion. The depth of worship lies in sincerely turning to God, dedicating oneself to Him. For worship is a submission not only with the body but also with the heart. Therefore, a heart infused with divine love makes worship more meaningful and effective, which increases the servant’s closeness to their Lord. The highest form of servitude is one dedicated solely to Him, and this requires that all other loves remain in the shadow of God’s love.
