The Danger of Becoming a Slave to Desire
An important point frequently emphasized in the works of Imam Ghazali is the danger that arises when a person succumbs to their desires. As exemplified by a story mentioned in the Quran, some people think in a manner similar to four-legged animals and struggle to find truth through reason. Their ideas are easily changed and diverted. This results from the weakening of human will and the desire taking control; thus, the individual is drawn into a path that leads them away from the truth.
Natural Inclinations of the Heart and the Influence of Passions
The human heart possesses a complex structure with diverse inclinations. Sometimes it carries a desire to avoid evil, while at other times it succumbs to the allure of passion. This is a reflection of the struggle between reason and the ego. From another perspective, some people act driven by ambition for status, position, and fame; when they become captivated by such passions, they lose control. They become pawns of Satan in moments of anger or their excessive attachment to money leads them to compromise their humanity. At the root of this lies the obscuring of the heart by the smoke of desire; this smoke extinguishes faith and brings a person closer to Satan.
The Internal War Between Faith and Desire
Within the inner world of the heart, there is a constant struggle between the vestiges of faith and the desires of passions. The ego fans the flames of desire while reason directs towards goodness. During this conflict, Satan attacks reason to strengthen the desire of the self; causing the person to feel hesitant and unhappy. However, an angel strives to make the voice of reason heard and reduce the influence of passion. A person wavers amidst the ebb and flow between these two forces and ultimately chooses a direction. This internal struggle of the heart is a crucial stage that shapes a person’s destiny; for they either submit to Satan or accept the guidance of the angel.
The Sovereignty of Fate and Human Responsibility
Whether a person wins or loses this inner battle is determined by Allah’s divine decree and fate. However, humans can influence this process through their choices and behaviors. Satan tries to deceive a person by exploiting their weaknesses; offering empty promises, making repentance easy, and leading them towards destruction. Therefore, a person must act with insight at every moment, not listen to the whispers of the ego, and hold fast to faith. It should be remembered that finding the right path is possible through Allah’s grace; but this requires constant effort and sincere intention.
