Falling into the Trap of Marvels
The works of Abdülkadir Geylânî illuminate a frequent misconception in the Sufi path: marvels. Events that appear impressive and extraordinary from the outside can lead some seekers (Sufi practitioners) astray. Such situations arise under the guise of witnessing divine decree, as an excuse to deviate from Sharia commands and prohibitions. However, true spiritual masters avoid such displays, focusing on living a life in accordance with divine commandments; for authentic sainthood is only possible by transforming marvels into beneficial actions in accordance with Sharia rules. Otherwise, this leads to a situation that warrants criticism.
Will and Responsibility: The Danger of Straying from the Sharia Path
Geylânî emphasizes the importance of correctly using will. Instead of acting according to one’s own desires, one should prioritize Sharia will (conformity to religious rulings). Turning away from Sharia will and succumbing to whims leads to being unworthy of forgiveness and requires punishment. Having will is not only about suppressing desires but also about choosing the path that Allah and His Messenger love; otherwise, a person remains captive to their own will and wanders in delusion, putting them in a situation similar to the error into which Christians have fallen. To be on the right path, one must know Sharia commands and act accordingly.
Prophets and Humanity’s Path: Following Perfection
In Geylânî’s work, the example of prophets such as Hz. Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and Hz. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is highlighted. Prophets represent humanity’s highest states; Hz. Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the last of all prophets and the master of humankind. Following their path is the key to attaining both worldly and afterlife happiness. As stated in authentic hadiths, the best speech is Allah’s speech, and the best way is the way of the prophets. People should adopt the example of the prophets, free themselves from the captivity of the self, and live a life in accordance with Sharia rules; thus they may become worthy of divine mercy.
