The Believer’s Heart, a Realm of Divine Presence
A striking analogy found in the works of Imam Ghazali reveals the potential of the human heart and its connection to the divine: “My being did not encompass the heavens and the earth, but the heart of the pious believer encompassed Me.” This statement emphasizes that while the universe has a limited size, the heart of a righteous believer can be a sanctuary for divine attributes and manifestations. The Tranquil Heart: The Purifying Power of Piety
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The best among people is he whose heart is tranquil.” This statement highlights the importance of spiritual maturity and inner peace. A tranquil heart is a breast purified from confusion and doubt, polished with piety. Piety is not just avoiding prohibitions; it is also turning towards Allah, purifying intentions, and keeping the heart clean. Hz. Omar (may Allah be pleased with him) saying, “My heart saw my Lord,” demonstrates that piety can lift the veil, allowing for a direct connection with the divine – which is the highest level of spiritual depth and inner peace.
The Realm of Malakut: The Reality Beyond Sight
Ghazali draws attention to the realm of Malakut, stating that beyond the physical world visible to the eyes lies a realm of hidden secrets and boundless expanse. The infinity of the realm of Malakut expresses a reality that transcends the limits of human intellect. The knowledge accessible in this realm is shaped according to the heart’s capacity; the more it is purified and nourished with piety, the broader its perspective becomes. Considering that Paradise is also thought to be a reflection of this realm of Malakut, purifying the heart and increasing spiritual depth becomes a fundamental condition for attaining happiness in the afterlife.
The Stations of Faith: A Journey from Imitation to Gnosis
Ghazali explains the different stations of faith with an example, making the depth and development of belief concrete. While the faith of the common people is limited to imitation, the faith of the theologians is based on evidence; but the faith of the gnostics (arifin) is realized through the heart’s direct experiential witnessing. These stations show that faith is more than just a mental acceptance; it is an understanding that encompasses the heart and shapes life. Each level requires continuous learning and inner searching, leading to deeper spiritual maturity, so that the lights of faith shine in the heart, ultimately leading to true peace.
