Hadith
Sufyan Ibn Abdullah said: – O Messenger of Allah! Tell me something that I must definitely do. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: – ‘Say, My Lord is Allah, then be truthful!’ I said: – O Messenger of Allah! What are you most concerned about regarding me? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of his blessed tongue and said: – ‘This is what I am most concerned about.’
Tirmidhi, Zuhd 61; See also Ibn Majah, Fitan 12.

What We Learn
  1. 1Saying “My Lord is Allah” and being truthful – that is, tawhid and uprightness – are two fundamental rules that every Muslim must firmly grasp and fulfill.
  2. 2Faith and uprightness mean happiness in this world and the hereafter.
  3. 3Lack of control over one’s tongue is the biggest source of concern for every Muslim.
  4. 4The companions (may Allah be pleased with them) asked questions to learn serious matters and strove as much as they could according to the answers they received.
