The Satanic Invasion of the Nafs
Although the human heart possesses a profound spiritual potential, it can fall under the influence of satanic forces by succumbing to the allure of desires and passions. This is more evident in individuals who disregard the afterlife and focus on worldly ambitions. Incorrect choices made in pursuit of sensual gratification fill the heart with whispers, leading it into darkness and pushing humanity towards spiritual emptiness. The most effective way to counter this invasion of the heart is to discipline the nafs (ego) and control desires; for abandoning desires is the first step in purifying the heart.
Purification of the Heart: Remembrance (Zikr) and Oneness (Tawhid)
Cleansing the heart from satanic influences requires continuous effort and spiritual practices. In this process, remembering Allah brings peace and light to the heart, facilitating access for angels. Zikr is not merely recitation with the tongue but a state of deep contemplation felt by the heart. As Jabir bin ‘Ubayd al-Ansari narrated, the heart is like a house that one desires; if it is cleansed of passions, Satan cannot enter. Therefore, remembering Allah is the most effective way to cleanse the heart and silence satanic whispers.
Combating Whispers (Waswasa): Awareness and Seeking Refuge
Human beings are always open to an internal struggle; for waswasa (whispers) constantly try to influence the heart. Our Prophet (Peace and Blessings be upon him) presented us with a practical method for this struggle in response to Amr bin Al-As’s complaint about whispers: seeking refuge in Allah and spitting three times to the left. This is not merely a symbolic act but also a spiritual defense mechanism. Even when performing ablution, it is necessary to seek refuge in Allah to protect oneself from Satan’s influence; because waswasa is a constant threat that seeks to corrupt the purity of the heart. Therefore, being attentive and turning towards Allah is the key to keeping whispers away.
