Hadith
Varrad, the scribe of Mugira, said: Mugira ibn Shu’ba dictated to me in a letter he sent to Muawiya (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite this supplication after each obligatory prayer: “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, alone, without any partners. Sovereignty belongs to Him, and praise is due to Him. He has power over all things. O Allah! There is no one who can prevent what You give, nor one who can give what You withhold; and wealth does not benefit the wealthy unless You grant them.” Mugira also wrote to Muawiya: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade gossip, wasting property, and asking unnecessary questions. He also forbade disobedience to mothers, burying female children alive, failing to give what is due, and claiming that which is not one’s right.

Narrator
Varrad He was both the freed slave and scribe of the esteemed companion Mugira ibn Shu’ba. He narrated hadith from some of the followers (tabi’un) alongside his master, Mugira. Ibn Hibban described him as a reliable narrator (sika). May Allah have mercy on him.
What We Learn
- 1The companions (Sahaba) were extremely eager to learn the Prophet’s Sunnah and hadiths. This hadith is evidence that the activity of collecting and compiling hadiths (tedwin) began in their time.
- 2The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited certain supplications after his prayers. We should also strive to learn and recite these supplications.
- 3In our religion, gossip, asking useless and unnecessary questions, and spending property in unlawful places are forbidden.
- 4The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade disobedience to parents, burying female children alive – a reprehensible custom of the Arabs – failing to give what is due, and claiming that which is not one’s right.
