The Depth of Tawhid: Uniting Not Just in Tongue, But in Heart
The understanding of tawhid frequently emphasized by Imam Ghazali goes beyond merely saying ‘La ilaha illallah’ in one’s tongue. True tawhid is the orientation of the entire heart towards Allah; it is submission to Him with thought, intention, and actions. Tawhid in the tongue may provide worldly benefits, but what truly matters on the journey to the hereafter is a sincere faith from the heart. This manifests itself in a person’s knowledge of Allah in every endeavor, their trust (tawakkul), and their tolerance towards others; for true tawhid is the eradication of malice and hatred.
The Scale and the Particle: The Degrees of Faith and Salvation from Hell
Ghazali explains the journey to the hereafter using the analogy of a scale (miskal) and a particle (zerre). This analogy expresses that faith can exist in different degrees, and deliverance from hell will occur gradually according to these degrees. Those who have faith weighing a dinar in their hearts will be released from hell before those with only a particle of faith; this highlights the importance of faith and the differences within hearts. This distinction serves as a reminder that faith is just a starting point and must be constantly increased.
Debts to Rights: Making Amends for Sins and Receiving Forgiveness
On the Day of Judgment, people’s recorded deeds will be used to pay off debts owed to others. If a person has harmed someone else, their merit (sevap) will be deducted to fulfill that right; otherwise, they will be dragged into hell. This demonstrates that being honest and just in human relationships is an important element on the path to salvation in the afterlife. The story of Ibn al-Jaldi highlights the virtue of taking on the sins of others with one’s own merits, thereby becoming a means for their forgiveness; this serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion and empathy.
The Eye of Discernment: Seeing Truth with the Insight of the Heart
Ghazali draws attention to the importance of discernment (basiret), stating that while the eye can be deceived, the heart’s insight can reach the truth. Basiret helps a person evaluate events correctly and act in accordance with Allah’s pleasure. Thanks to this inner ability, one better understands the transience of worldly life and the importance of the afterlife. Seeking truth with the intuitions of the heart beyond what is seen with the eyes is necessary for deepening faith; for those whose hearts’ eyes are open can find the true path.
