Seeking a Solution to the Heart’s Illness
As frequently emphasized in the works of Imam Ghazali, the greatest need of humankind is the treatment of the heart with knowledge and spiritual insight. In the rush of worldly life, we tend to neglect the needs of our inner selves. This creates an environment for the heart to be afflicted by spiritual illnesses. However, treating this illness is not easy; because those who are the physicians of the heart – righteous individuals – are unfortunately rare these days and may themselves be susceptible to the allure of worldliness. Therefore, instead of encouraging people towards the right path, they may engage in behaviors that lead them astray, leading to the spiritual decline of society. True healing can only be obtained from those who possess knowledge and have noble character, but finding such a guide is increasingly difficult within today’s complex structure.
The Balance of Hope and Fear: Medicine or Poison?
Ghazali states that hope and fear are also two separate remedies. Especially for a person in the clutches of worldly desires and ambitions, it is necessary to treat them not only with fear but also with hope. Fear shows the terror of sin, while hope reminds one that the door of repentance is open. However, these two elements must be used in a balanced way; otherwise, excessive hope can lead to complacency, and excessive fear can lead to despair. Especially for someone who has strayed into rebellion and feels guilt, giving them hope to repent is like a physician administering a poisonous drug to a patient seeking recovery; this situation can worsen the condition. Therefore, spiritual guidance is needed to find the right path.
The Responsibility of Preachers and the Importance of Showing the Right Way
Ghazali also emphasizes the great responsibility that preachers have upon society. If preachers engage people with topics that satisfy their desires rather than bringing them closer to Allah, this will further mislead society and accelerate spiritual decline. The duty of preachers is to warn people with verses from the Quran and hadiths, to keep them away from sin, and to show them the right way. However, preachers should not only give superficial advice but should deliver messages that touch hearts and awaken consciences. Otherwise, sermons will remain nothing more than empty rhetoric and will not nourish people spiritually.
The Door of Repentance is Always Open: We Must Not Despair
Islam has always made repentance possible. Allah Ta’ala hastens to accept the repentance of His servant and forgives sins. Therefore, one should never despair. No matter how many mistakes have been made in the past, one can make a new beginning by repenting. Even hadiths describing the greatness of Allah’s mercy announce that it is possible for even a slave’s sins to be transformed into reward. These encouraging messages encourage people to repent and strengthen them spiritually; thus, a person learns from their mistakes, lives a more moral life, and draws closer to Allah.
