The Veil Between This World and the Hereafter
In Islamic thought, this world is a realm we perceive with our senses, a property that belongs to us. In contrast, the afterlife is an unseen realm of the unknown, which we have not yet experienced. These two different dimensions remind us that worldly life is temporary and limited, while the Hereafter is a gateway to an existence extending into eternity. This world is a state of waiting before awakening, while the Hereafter is the reality where this waiting ends; just like the difference between sleep and wakefulness.
Waking Up from Sleep: The Meaning of Symbols
The Prophetic tradition (peace be upon him) 'People are asleep until they die,' expresses that worldly life is a kind of illusion or state of sleep. This analogy indicates that people may not see the true meanings within their worldly ambitions and passions. It is possible to grasp clues about the Hereafter through symbolic meanings via dream interpretation; the surface of the dream is a lie, but its depth can express truth. For example, dreaming of covering up mistakes with a seal symbolizes the need to become aware of sins, repent, and take corrective steps.
Moral Obligations: Preparation for Worldly Awakening
Since a Muslim should see worldly life as preparation for the Hereafter, it is obligatory to fulfill their moral responsibilities and approach worldly difficulties with patience. Actions such as fasting during the month of Ramadan and listening to the call to prayer at dawn are concrete examples of waking up from the world’s sleep. These behaviors are aimed at disciplining the self, strengthening spirituality, and increasing awareness of the Hereafter. Acting with a sense of servitude to God, without being captivated by the false allure of worldly life, is the key to true awakening.
Wisdom from the Prophets: The Importance of Parables
The prophets (peace be upon them) used symbolic language and parables to convey the reality of the Hereafter to humanity. This helps people to move beyond worldly patterns and grasp deeper meanings. A parable may express a falsehood on the surface, but it conveys the meaning within accurately; just like a flock being carried by a ram. This symbolic narration reminds us of the inevitability of death and the reckoning in the Hereafter. Explaining events that reason cannot comprehend with parables full of wisdom is an indication of divine wisdom.
