The Limits of Existence and Abandoning the Path

A recurring theme in the works of Jalaluddin Rumi is the desire to transcend the limits of existence. The constraints of worldly life chain a person to the shackles of their ego and divert them from the path of truth. Rumi sees severing these worldly ties, that is, “going beyond existence,” as a necessity; for true union arises from the submission of a soul purified of personal desires. This is not merely a physical journey but also an inner transformation; it means a person surpassing the boundaries of their own ego and integrating with truth.

Non-Existence: The Key to Understanding the Mystery of Existence

In Rumi’s philosophy, “non-existence” is not seen as deficiency or emptiness, but rather as a key to understanding the mystery of existence. For Rumi, existence is a constantly changing, transient perception; the real thing is the infinite and eternal truth that lies beyond these perceptions. Non-existence is an instrument for reaching this divine reality; it is a step to be taken to shed all the illusions of the ego and turn towards absolute being. At this point, Rumi’s metaphors of ‘ad’ (address) and ‘sahip’ (owner) are striking: while ‘ad’ points to truth with its closeness to the owner, non-existence prepares the ground for this rapprochement.

The Path of Love: Seeking Light from Mount Tur and Shamsu’s Guidance

Rumi’s teaching is based on a philosophy of submission steeped in love. This journey of enlightenment is symbolized by longing for Mount Tur; benefiting from the mountain’s light, asking for divine grace. Rumi advises those who follow this path not to be discouraged by difficulties, to look at life with hope, and not to hesitate to seek help. The guidance of Shamsu-i Tabrizi played a critical role in Rumi’s enlightenment; Shams’ presence is depicted as a flashlight showing the right way to hearts and a source of light bringing closeness to homes. Without this guidance, humans find it difficult to find truth.
