**Article One**
The constant shifting of the human heart's state through every moment is due to the management and disposition ( *idare* and *tasarruf*) of Allah, the Turner of Hearts (*mukallibü’l-kulûb*), as conveyed by verses and honorable hadith.
O esteemed one! Know that the Exalted has, through His generosity, revealed to His servants the states of their hearts. Indeed, in His Eternal Word, He has commanded thus: “(They pray): Our Lord! Guide us to the straight path, The path of those you have favored; not of those who earned Your wrath, nor of those who went astray. Bestow on us Your mercy. You are the most merciful.” (Al-Imran, 3/8) “Allah has done this only to give you joy and relief in your hearts.” (Al-Imran, 3/126) "Allah wants to test you [with what is in your inner selves] and purify what is in your hearts." (Al-Imran, 3/154) “We turn their hearts over [in every state].” (An’am, 6/110) “If anyone is meant by Allah to follow a right path, He opens his heart to Islam; but if one is destined to go astray, He tightens his heart as if it were a stone.” (An’am, 6/125) "To gladden the hearts of the believers and remove from their hearts anxiety." (Tawba, 9/14-15) “To unite their hearts.” (Enfal, 8/11) “You are not held accountable for what you do by mistake; but you will be held accountable for [the intention in] your hearts.” (Ahzab, 33/5) “(But after that,) your hearts hardened. So they became like stone or even harder.” (Baqara, 2/74)
“Say: What if Allah were to deafen your ears, blind your eyes, and seal your hearts? Who could restore them to you except Allah?” (An’am, 6/46) “But their hearts became hardened.” (An’am, 6/43) "Those whose hearts are in doubt and wavering." (Tawba, 9/45) "(The Jews said,) -Our hearts are veiled-." “These are the ones whom Allah does not wish to purify their hearts. They will have disgrace in this world and a great torment in the Hereafter.” (Ma’ida, 5/41) “Then they turn away. For they are a people who do not understand; so Allah seals their hearts [from faith].” (Tawba, 9/127) "These are those whom Allah has sealed their hearts and ears, and set a barrier over their vision." (Nahl, 16/108) "(Those who oppose you) have they not traveled throughout the earth? Surely, if they had [done so], they would have understood [with their] minds and hearts. But their eyes do not become blind; rather, it is the hearts within that are blind." (Hajj, 22/46) "Is there a sickness in their hearts or are they in doubt?" “Do they not reflect upon the Qur’an? Or is their hearts locked [from it]?” (Muhammad, 47/24) "Allah seals every arrogant tyrant's heart." (Ghafir, 40/35) “But Allah’s punishment came to them unexpectedly, filling their hearts with terror.” (Hashr, 59/2) "When they turned away, Allah turned their hearts away [from guidance].” (Saf, 61/5) “Nay! Rather, what they do has defiled their hearts. Nay! Indeed, they will be deprived of their Lord on that Day." (Mutaffifin, 83/14-15) "These are the believers whose hearts find rest in Allah’s remembrance. Know that it is only through remembering Allah that hearts find tranquility.” (Ra'd, 13/28) “He strengthened their hearts.” Those who stood firm [against the ruler] said: ‘Our Lord is He Who owns the heavens and the earth." “(O Prophet!) Give glad tidings to those who are sincere and humble. They are those whose hearts tremble when Allah is mentioned.” (Hajj, 22/34-35) “Then their bodies and hearts soften from remembrance of Allah.” (Zumar, 39/23) "These are the ones guided by Allah; these are the men of reason." (Zumar, 39/18) "Indeed, in this is a lesson for those who possess insight." (Zumar, 39/21) “It is He Who sends peace into the hearts of the believers, adding to their faith.” (Fath, 48/4) “When you gave them the pledge under the tree, Allah was pleased with the believers; and He knew what was in their hearts, so He reassured them and rewarded them with a victory close at hand." (Fath, 48/18) "It is He who unites their hearts.” (Enfal, 8/63)
"Has the time not come for the hearts of the believers to be humbled by Allah’s remembrance and what has been revealed?" (Hadid, 57/16) “Indeed, in this is a lesson for whoever is perceptive or gives heed." (Kaf, 50/37) "And We sent down compassion and mercy upon their hearts.” (Hadid, 57/27) "He inscribed faith on his heart and reinforced it with a spirit from Him." (Mujadala, 58/22)
“Whoever believes in Allah, Allah will direct his heart.” (Taghabun, 64/11) “And He gave them abilities and made [a choice] between good and evil.”
Indeed, I swear by Him who gives inspiration, that whoever purifies himself from evil has attained salvation, and he who buries himself in evil is ruined.” (The Sun, 91/7-10) “Did We not open your breast [for you]?” (Al-Inshirah, 94/1)
Hazrat Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“Indeed, there is a piece of flesh in the human body that, if it is sound, the whole body is sound. And if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Take heed! It is the heart.”
Therefore, rectifying the heart is most important and takes precedence over all else. For the heart is a sultan whose decrees are binding, and all other members of the body are its servants and citizens. The rectification of the heart lies in removing from it bad habits and characteristics and adorning it with good ones – that is to say, following the footsteps of the Messenger of God (peace be upon him) in his words, actions, and character.
For he himself said: “I have been sent to perfect the beautiful traits,” and announced that a person can attain happiness in both worlds through their beautiful character.

1-My heart laments, why am I restless and agitated?
2-What reason causes my name to become the heart, and why do I change state so often?
3-Who pulls on my thread of faith in every direction, constantly?
4-Whose hand holds me, that I am drawn this way and that?
5-Sometimes I am like mountains, sometimes like a sea.
6-Sometimes like paradise, sometimes like a blazing fire.
7-Sometimes like a temple of idols, sometimes like the Sacred House [Kaaba].
8-Sometimes I become perfect in intoxication (a generous spirit), sometimes calculating and miserly.
9-When he reaches God with whatever attributes he possesses,
10-He prostrates before Him, saying, “I am close to You.”
11-How does the light of his seal adhere to him?
12-The heart says: "Follow him, so too shall I be attached to God."
13-I have become both shadow and companion to that sun (divine presence), O God!
14-Yet I cannot see Him; veiled by my own existence.
