FIFTH CHAPTER · Third Section

Third Section

It explains the security and well-being, benefits and wonders (karāma) provided to the heart (qalb) and spirit (ruh) by contemplating the appearance and forms of human organs with understanding and intuition.

O dear one! It should be known that the philosophers have said: The wise Creator, who created the universe in this manner and determined its order and harmony, also fashioned the human microcosm, which resembles it, in the most beautiful form (ahsan-i taqwīm), adorning it by breathing spirit (ruh) into it and illuminating it. Among the animal species, He made the human kind the most beautiful and the most balanced, and endowed it with reason and bayān (clear exposition), making it virtuous and perfect. Indeed, He created all of humankind essentially and in their original creation (fiṭra) as one. However, He created individual humans in appearance and character (sīra) as opposites and different from one another. By His grace and favor, He manifested the reality of His wisdom and the subtlety of His artistry in the human microcosm, making the outward form a sign and indication of character, and the limbs a sign of morals. Thus, a person should first, by reflecting on his own appearance, come to know his own attributes completely, and strive to beautify his character with care.

Then, by looking with understanding and intuition at the appearances of his peers and friends, when he becomes aware of the states and morals hidden in each of their essences, he should either treat them with affection and love according to their nature, or act prudently and manage accordingly, or withdraw from all of them (uzla: seclusion) and attain security and well-being, honor and comfort. Thus, he will neither be hurt by anyone nor hurt anyone. He will sit and rise in contentment of heart, alone.

Verse

In the garden of the world, O wise one, this is what is valued among humans and jinn:

Let no one be hurt by you, nor you be hurt by anyone.

In contemporary Turkish

O intelligent person! In this world, your worth is this, whether you are human or jinn: "Let no one be hurt by you, nor you be hurt by anyone."

In the noble hadith it is said: "Seek goodness among those with beautiful faces."

That is, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has informed everyone that from a good person, a smiling face is seen, sweet words are heard, and good character and good deeds arise.

Whoever looks at people with the eye of wisdom

Perceives the reality in every matter according to its essence

In contemporary Turkish

Whoever looks at people with the eye of wisdom perceives the truth in every matter.

Allah, exalted is He, out of the perfection of His generosity, has indicated and given glad tidings: "Say: Everyone acts according to his own disposition. But your Lord knows best who is best guided on the way" (al-Isrāʾ, 17:84). At the same time, He has graciously declared Himself to be Gafūr (All-Forgiving), Ḥalīm (Forbearing), Karīm (Generous), Raūf (Kind), and Raḥīm (Merciful) to everyone. For everyone has seen that each person does what befits him.

"O Allah! Make us among Your people in matters of religion and the world. O our Master! Do not make us among those unworthy of You in either of these. Surely, You are exceedingly forgiving, Ḥalīm, most generous, Karīm, Raūf, and merciful. You are worthy of all praise and abundant glorification." [18]
