The Divine Knowledge and Will in the Creation of the Universe
The profound philosophical thoughts found in the works of Muhyiddin Ibn al-Arabi offer a striking perspective on the origin of existence. It is emphasized that while the universe remains fixed in divine truth, it has passed into a different dimension with creation; this expresses the independence of the Divine manifestation from the limitations of time and space. It is stated that Allah did not undergo a thought process arising from deficiency or ignorance when creating the universe, but rather accomplished this creation based on an eternal knowledge and a sanctified will. Universal Hearing, Seeing, and Divine Speech
Ibn al-Arabi emphasizes that Allah hears, sees, and knows everything in the universe. This expresses the absoluteness of divine proximity and accessibility; distance or obstacle cannot hinder Allah’s knowledge and power. He hears the inner dialogues of the soul, perceives what can be seen even in darkness; this is an indication of divine boundlessness. Furthermore, it is stated that Allah’s speech is also eternal and ancient, and that the conversation with Moses appeared as Tenzil (Quran). The important point is that Allah is the creator of sounds, letters, and languages, therefore He must have existed before these elements.
Allah’s Essential Attributes and the Balance of Grace-Justice
Ibn al-Arabi states that Allah’s essence is an absolute being that does not accept increase or decrease. He is far and near; His authority is strong, His grace is abundant, and His generosity is plentiful. Everything found in existence emanates from His generosity; this reminds the created of their dependence on Allah and their debt of gratitude. It is also stated that Grace and Justice are applicable to Allah Himself, meaning they are opened and constricted by His will. This understanding emphasizes the delicate balance between divine justice and grace; because bestowing blessings or experiencing hardship is a manifestation of Allah’s attributes and is not under the control of another. Therefore, everything is dependent on Allah’s will and command; this is an expression of absolute divine sovereignty.
