Article Three
It describes how the fetus's organs come into being.
O Noble One! Know that anatomists have said: All bodily organs, whose parts resemble one another, originate from two sperm. Flesh and fat are excepted from this, for both are composed of blood. Therefore – with the exception of flesh and fat – the components of organs which resemble each other arise from the father’s sperm, just as cheese arises from rennet. And they come into being in the fetus as renneted milk becomes cheese. Similarly, both the chyle and milk are a portion of all the particles from which they are formed. Likewise, each of the two sperms is a portion of every essence within the fetus residing in the womb. Following this, the menstrual blood of the carrier becomes nourishment for the fetus through its umbilical passage, by which it is nourished and grows. That which does not become nourishment fills the spaces between the prior organs, becoming flesh and fat. Excess blood remains until the time of postpartum bleeding, thereby removing the mother’s nature from her. After the child's birth, the nutritive blood formed in the liver takes the place of the blood drawn from the umbilical cord, closing the umbilical channel; and flesh and fat begin to form from that blood. Flesh arises from the solid portion of the blood, shaped by its warmth and dryness. Fat, however, originates from watery and oily blood; for this reason it dissolves and separates with heat.
If one of the tissues arising from two sperms is separated from the body, then the other cannot truly unite with it either. If a part is deficient, an entity like that will not be recreated; for example, bone. However, in the early years of childhood, a child’s teeth regenerate. A tissue (limb) originating from blood, after its loss, completely ends and attaches to its likeness; such as flesh.
