Article Six
Regarding the easiest method for division by two (Tasnif).
O Noble One! Know that mathematicians have said: The easiest way to divide a number by two is as follows:
Write the numbers as described above and draw the operation line, then from left to right, write half of each digit beneath its corresponding position under the operation line.
If the digit is even, write its half as a whole number. And if the digit is odd, retain the excess '5' in mind and add it to the half of the subsequent digit. If there is a number other than 1 present, write that retained '5' beneath the next digit.
If the digit contains a 1 or a 0 (zero), retain the '5' for that 1 in mind and proceed as described until the end of the digits. Once all the digits are completed, if there remains a fractional part, write it to the right of the operation line (in the shape of an alif – ) so that it does not mix with the numerals.
