FIFTH CHAPTER · Seventh Section
Seventh Section
It explains the confirmation (taʿdīl) of the appearances (kıyafet) of the organs through contradictory information and evidence,
and the rulings that vary according to the diverse creation of people.
O dear one! It should be known that the philosophers have said: If all the contradictory information and evidence explained in the section on the appearances (kıyafet) of the organs were to be gathered in a single person, all of them would balance, adorn, and perfect him.
For example, if a beardless man is tall, he cannot be blamed as "he is beardless," because
his height has compensated for his lack of beard. Who could blame him?
If his face is also radiant, the people of the heart would consider that beardlessness as light. Thus,
whichever side's qualities are predominant in a person, he is known by that side. If
the light of the Real (al-Ḥaqq) becomes an eye for someone, his spiritual insight (firāsa) becomes independent of the aforementioned evidence. For it has been narrated from the Noble Beloved (the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him):
"Beware the spiritual insight (firāsa) of the believer, for he looks with the light of Allah."
For all the aforementioned signs are indicators of the morals and attributes of the animal nafs (the lower self). Thus, if a person's nafs is the nafs al-ammāra (the commanding nafs), that nafs, being captive to the animal nafs, falls under its rule and is not purified from every kind of darkness, ignorance, and ambiguous, confused matters. Sometimes it is characterized by satanic traits, sometimes by predatory animal traits, and sometimes by animal traits. Yet in appearance, it is in human form.
If a person's nafs is the nafs al-lawwāma, sometimes being overcome by the animal nafs and sometimes prevailing over it, this nafs al-lawwāma is sometimes known by animal traits and sometimes by human traits. If a person's nafs is the nafs al-mulhima, and it always prevails over the animal nafs and becomes mutmaʾinna (at peace), then its struggle turns to peace, its disputes and conflicts turn to contentment (riḍā), and evils become complete good for it. This is not limited to good and evil; the nafs becomes the absolute ruh (spirit). Having abandoned all that it possesses, strangers (aghyār) become friends (yār) to it. No sign or mark of its own existence remains. Its qualities are endless to describe.
Come, O seeker of the Real, forget the creation
Transcend this selfhood and make yourself dust
And purify your qalb (the heart), which is the gaze-place of God, from all that is other-than-Him (mā-siwā)
Then realize that He is the intimate of the heart (anīs al-qalb)
And with His love, tear apart the habits of nature
In contemporary Turkish
Come, O seeker of the Real, forget the people. Transcend this selfhood, make yourself earth.
Cleanse your qalb, which is the gaze-place of God, from all that is other-than-Him (mā-siwā). Realize that He is the "anīs al-qulūb" (the intimate of hearts). With the love of the Real, shatter the laws of physics.
Verse [146/a]
Whoever desires the intimacy of the Beloved
Let him not give place in his heart to other-than-Him (mā-siwā)
In contemporary Turkish
Whoever wishes to be close to the Beloved; let him not give place in his heart to other-than-Him (mā-siwā).
Qitʿa (Stanza)
1-Understand the people of the age, do not be arrogant
Find the Friend in your heart, and conceal yourself from every gaze
2-What favor is there in the crowd whose heart's mirror is sealed?
Leave the people of heedlessness and ignorance, and find peace in your heart
3-Since the affliction of man is man himself, forget these people
Let your heart find intimacy and joy with the Lord of mankind
