**Article Five**
Concerning the Form of the Body's Limbs (Garments)
O esteemed one! Know that philosophers have said:
1- One with pointed shoulders
His affairs will be grievous
One with pointed shoulders is impudent, and his affairs are bad.
2- A person with curved shoulders
His work will be crooked
The work of the one with curved shoulders is also crooked.
3- The short-shouldered fool
The fallen-shouldered is disgraced
The short-shouldered is a simpleton; the slumped shoulder is shameful.
4- One with moderate shoulders
Its possessor understands subtleties
One with moderate shoulders possesses subtle understanding.
5- A short, curved hand
He will be wicked if it is so
A hand that is short and curved will be ill-disposed.
6- If the wrist is long
He freely gives alms
One with a long wrist gives alms without awareness.
7- If the hand is small
It is uniquely beautiful
If the hand is small, it is exquisitely beautiful.
8- A long fingertip
He is skilled and learned
A fingertip that is long indicates skill and knowledge.
9- A soft fingertip
Surely he is alert and clever
A fingertip that is soft is undoubtedly perceptive and intelligent.
10- If the nail is not broad
Love him morning and evening
Love one whose nails are not wide, both morning and evening.
11- If the nail is round and chipped
Woe to him who does not know compassion
A nail that is round and chipped knows no mercy.
12- If the nail is flat and straight
Then his hand will be open
The nail of one who is flat and straight has an open hand.
13- One whose chest protrudes
His character is also bad
The character of one whose chest protrudes is also ill.
14- If his chest is constricted
He grieves night and day
One with a constricted chest grieves night and day.
15- If the chest is broad
His heart will never be afflicted
The heart of one with a broad chest will never be sorrowful.
16- The hair on the chest and shoulders
Is evidence of audacity
The hairs on the chest and shoulders are proof of its possessor’s boldness.
22- One whose flesh is soft
The spirit finds comfort within him
In the flesh of one with gentle flesh, the soul also finds ease.
23- One whose flesh is pleasing and refined
He becomes a knower and elegant
One whose flesh is pleasing and refined becomes a learned and graceful person.
24- One whose flesh is very firm
He is strong in his scabbard
The firmness of one with very tough flesh is also strength.
25- A person with a flat back
His affairs are base and dissolute
A person with a flat back is given to dissipation and degradation.
26- One with a hunched back
His character is ugly as well
The character of the one with a hunchback is also foul. [144/b]
27- One whose back is broad
He possesses great strength
One with a broad back has great strength.
28- If his waist is slender
His form becomes exquisite
The form of one with a slender waist is beautifully proportioned.
30- A large belly is for the ignorant
A small belly belongs to a gentleman
One with a large belly is unrefined; one with a small belly is a gentleman.
31- A large belly and short stature
He is ill-tempered and harsh
One with a large belly and short stature is of bad temper and severe.
32- If hair does not grow in the groin
His nature becomes savage
The nature of one whose groin is devoid of hair becomes wild.
33- One with broad thighs
He is surely lazy
One with broad thighs is undoubtedly indolent.
43- One with large knees
He carries a heavy burden
A person with large knees bears a great weight.
44- One with a rough foot
He lacks grace
The one with the coarse foot has no gentleness.
45- A fleshy woman’s heel, accept her as coquettish
Accept a fleshy-heeled woman as flirtatious.
46- One with delicate ankles
She is surely beautiful and charming
One with delicate ankles is undoubtedly lovely and endearing.
47- A man with thick ankles
He is unique in courage
A man with thick ankles is unparalleled in bravery.
48- One with broad feet
His affairs are injustice and oppression
The affairs of one with broad feet are filled with inequity.
49- If the foot is long
He possesses modesty and shame
One with a long foot is modest and bashful.
50- A long fingertip
He is full of knowledge and skill
A fingertip that is long indicates knowledge and skill.
51- One with a narrow instep
His gait is pleasing
The walk of one with a narrow instep is beautiful.
52- When he becomes graceful
Reason marvels at him
Because he walks with grace, reason is astonished by him.
