The Fundamental Elements of Creation
Hacı Bektaş Velî emphasizes that understanding the creation of humanity forms the foundation for attaining spiritual maturity. According to him, humans are composed of four fundamental elements: earth, water, fire, and air. Each of these elements represents different aspects of human nature; earth symbolizes material existence, water signifies emotional depth, fire represents desire and passion, while air expresses vital elements such as reason and breath. The fact that humans consist of these four fundamental elements indicates that they possess both worldly and otherworldly dimensions; it points to the complexity of creation.
Sharia, Tariqa, and Marifa: Stages of the Spiritual Journey
In the teachings of Hacı Bektaş Velî, Sharia, Tariqa, and Marifa represent three important stages. Sharia encompasses the fundamental rules and acts of worship of Islam; a path that must be meticulously followed by believers. Tariqa is the process of disciplining the ego, correcting moral flaws, and purifying the heart; a journey akin to refining gold in fire for ascetics. Marifa is knowing God, understanding His manifestations, and attaining spiritual truths; this stage emerges as a fruit of the other two stages. These three stages complement each other, and all must be followed simultaneously for human true maturity.
The Importance of Marifa and the Understanding of Tawhid
According to Hacı Bektaş Velî, marifa requires a deeper understanding compared to the other stages. Marifa not only involves acquiring knowledge but also knowing God with one’s heart and witnessing His existence. This depth of knowledge transforms one’s understanding of Tawhid; helping them grasp the unity and uniqueness of God. A person who possesses marifa realizes that all beings in the universe are manifestations of God, and with this awareness, they face the world with more love and compassion, leading a beneficial life for humanity.
Obstacles and Solutions in Human Spiritual Development
Hacı Bektaş Velî also draws attention to the obstacles that one may encounter on the path of spiritual development. The ego’s bad desires, pride, envy, stinginess, and other negative emotions are major obstacles on this path. However, the way to overcome these obstacles is through patience, gratitude, humility, and love. Humans must constantly observe themselves, try to correct their mistakes, and turn towards God. In this way, humans can discipline their egos and attain spiritual maturity; thus attaining happiness in this world and the hereafter.
