Transcending Transience: Becoming a State of Being
Mevlana Jalaluddin Rumi consistently calls upon humanity in his works to engage in constant contemplation. This call is not merely about focusing on worldly existence, but embarking on a spiritual journey. By confronting our souls that depart from our bodies each night, we must remember death at every moment; this prompts us to awaken to the transience of our ego. According to Rumi, what truly matters is breaking free from this transient world and turning towards eternal truth, which requires a continuous process of transformation.
The Balance Between Desire and Submission
While Rumi values the eagerness and quest within a person, he emphasizes that it must be balanced. Desire is like a chemical substance; when directed correctly, it nourishes the soul, but if overindulged, it consumes. Therefore, while placing our souls in the palm of desire, we must also act with submission and strive to remain close to God even at moments when our souls depart from our bodies. This balance is critical for human happiness both in this world and in the hereafter.
The Expression of the Heart: Turning Towards the Universe with Love and Compassion
In Rumi’s teachings, the heart (gonul) is the most important attribute. Expanding the heart, spreading love, and feeling compassion are the essence of being human. A person’s heart illuminates the world, offers hope, and brings people together; conversely, a lack of heartfelt connection leads to broken bonds and darkness prevailing. Love, according to Rumi, is not merely an emotion but also a universal remedy, and turning towards the universe with this love helps one unleash their inner potential. This love, sometimes leading to intense emotions like jealousy, ultimately transforms into all-encompassing affection.
