Beyond Existence: A State of Unity

Taming the Ego and Turning Towards Truth

The ego, likened to a dog, is nourished by jealousy and selfishness, leading one astray from truth; therefore, instead of being hurt by the successes of others, one must focus on recognizing their own potential. Misinterpreting the Quran with personal desires is an indication of distorting truth and can lead to deviation. However, approaching with humility and sincerity allows for divine guidance – which is achieved through self-knowledge and correcting one’s errors. Progressing along the path by cutting through earth symbolizes overcoming obstacles to reach truth; conversely, pride and self-satisfaction bind one with chains and lead to ruin.
The Path of Love: Tasting Sugar and Reaching Annihilation
Rumi’s teaching states that the path of love transcends worldly limitations. To progress on this path, one must draw inspiration from sweet friends like Shams-i Tabrizi, eliminate dualistic thinking, and purify by filtering out the dregs of existence. Reaching annihilation is the first step towards abandoning the boundaries of the self and attaining divine unity; this requires relinquishing all attachments and progressing in the light of truth. With the power of love, even death can be transformed into a beautiful rose garden, while clinging to existence will lead one into darkness. Therefore, following Rumi’s advice, we should strive to see with the eye of the soul and attempt to understand truth from the heart.
