The essence, qualities, and states of water are explained in seven points: its transformation and alteration of attributes and names; its becoming vapor when in the sea, then turning into snow and rain from clouds, descending to springs and rivers, and returning as seawater; its movement with diverse motions; the transmutation and metamorphosis of seas into one another; the provision of various benefits by water for terrestrial and marine creatures within it; the emergence of living beings therein; the varying depths of oceans, which are measured through different methods, serving as a measure of the water’s thickness; the navigation of ships upon them, enabling the people of the earth to travel where they will and do as they please; and the discovery of the New World (America), with ships circumnavigating the globe and traveling westward, eventually returning eastward.
