Following the Path of Shams: The Dissolution of Reason

In the works of Mevlânâ Celaleddin-i Rûmî, particularly in the Divan-ı Kebir, the motif of the musician represents a form of spiritual guidance. Hearing the name Shamseddin through the musician’s voice is more than just a name for Mevlânâ; it signifies the transition beyond the limits of reason, the dissolution of the self, and the beginning of being molded by love. The fact that Mevlânâ also loses his religion with the mention of Shams’s name is actually an expression of surrendering worldly beliefs to the truth of divine love. It points to a place where reason proves inadequate in comprehending the depth of love, thus necessitating its temporary suspension.

Pleasure Beyond Measure with the Compass of the Heart

Mevlânâ calls for distancing oneself from worldly pleasures and logic. He views reason as an obstacle to understanding love. Emphasizing that beauty is something beyond what reason can grasp, he states that the tent of pleasure must be erected independently of reason, beyond boundaries. This approach expresses that worldly perceptions keep humans away from grasping spiritual truth, while love is an experience beyond rational thought. It reminds us of the necessity of leaving reason behind and delving into the depths of the heart to reach the ecstasy of love.

The Soul Washed with Wine: Union with Eternity

The metaphor of wine frequently found in Mevlânâ’s works symbolizes divine love. Drinking this wine represents the purification of the self, shedding mortal shells, and integrating with truth. Under the influence of the wine, reason is temporarily suspended, while the potential lying deep within the soul is revealed. The one who drinks the wine of eternity transcends worldly boundaries and becomes molded by divine love; thus, the mortal soul embarks on a journey towards immortality. During this process, spiritual transformations such as personality transformation and ego dissolution, and integration with the universe occur; these are indicators of reaching the true purpose of love.
