Devotion and Sacrifice in Love
In the works of Mevlâna Celaleddin Rumi, love is not merely an emotion but a path; those who follow this path are tested by sacrifice and devotion. It is emphasized that worldly desires, even personal rights, must be disregarded in the face of the power of love. The transformation of beautiful faces into thorny ones, the ego’s Pharaohs appearing as serpents, symbolize the difficulties and sacrifices encountered on the journey of love; because true love requires overcoming selfish feelings, which allows a person to see their self from a different perspective. This devotion can mean being like a ship tossed in the winds of love, while also being a source of inner strength.
Liberation from the Lordship of the Ego
In Mevlâna’s teachings, the ego is depicted as the greatest obstacle to attaining love. The ego’s ambitions and desires prevent a person from seeing their true self; therefore, it is essential to discipline the ego, that is, to control it. Standing firm in the fortress symbolizes protection from the dangers of the outside world, but also means an internal struggle: moving from the carnal soul (nefs-i emmare) to the purified soul (nefs-i nefif). By seeking refuge in the grace of love and conquering the ego, a person is elevated to a higher level of consciousness, thereby drawing closer to the self; this initiates a spiritual purification process.
Integration with Divine Love and Unity of Existence
In Mevlâna, love expresses not only a human emotion but also a divine reality. This love allows the person to transcend their own self and integrate with the universe. Becoming dust before the moon is the most beautiful expression of submission and humility to God; because true love aims to eliminate the selfish ego and unite with the divine being. This union forms the basis of the belief in Unity of Existence (Vahdet-i Mevcud): realizing that all creation comes from a single source and that everything is interconnected; this allows human beings to transcend their own selves and attain a universal consciousness.
