The Ecstasy of Reason and the Secret of the Heart
In the works of Mevlânâ Celaleddin Rumi, love is depicted as a force that transforms individuals, bewilders reason, and deepens the heart. The influence of love sometimes causes reason to foam and push its limits; because love is an universal truth beyond the comprehension of the rational mind. This ecstasy leads to intense emotional and spiritual fluctuations within the individual. Mevlânâ states that this situation can distance a person from their own self but can also be an important step on the path to truth; because surrendering to love is the first step in overcoming egoism.
The Healing of the Heart and a State of Goodness
Mevlana’s teachings emphasize the importance of beautifying the heart. The heart is not only an emotional center, but also a source of love, compassion, and mercy. Under the influence of Şems-i Tabrizi, distortions in the individual are corrected, their perspective changes, and the heart gains a broader perspective. However, this transformation of the heart is not easy; overcoming the obstacles of the ego, disciplining the nafs (self) is a long and demanding process. Virtues such as patience, gratitude, and humility play an important role in this process.
A Devotion Beyond Loyalty
Another important theme found in Mevlânâ’s works is love and devotion. The essence of love includes selflessness and sacrifice. When viewed through the eye of the heart, the transience of worldly beauties is understood, and people turn to eternal reality. The concept of loyalty is an expression of devotion to love in Mevlânâ’s teachings; however, this devotion is not limited to external behaviors but also requires inner transformation. Because true love purifies the self from its transient worldly desires and directs it towards divine love.
Spiritual Journey and Reaching Truth
Mevlânâ describes the spiritual journey as a wheel, with the body constantly turning while the soul remains hidden. This transformation allows one to know oneself and integrate with the universe. The Fihi Ma Fihi (Discourses) guide on this journey, but an inner quest is required to reach truth. Mevlânâ’s teachings encourage people to be patient, strive, and surrender; because attaining spiritual maturity is a challenging process and requires constant effort. While progressing on this path, it is important to stay away from ostentation, possess humility, and benefit from the grace of the heart.
