Beyond Existence, a Grace
These words from Jalaluddin Rumi’s Divan-i Kebir depict a grace that transcends the boundaries of existence. The Water of Life (Ab-ı Hayat), for Rumi, is not merely a physical revitalizer; it is also a symbol of divine love and truth. This grace is so great that even those who are honorably represented by proxy desire something from this river of love. Rumi’s teaching emphasizes that everyone, regardless of religion, belief, or worldview, should turn to the source of this love, for it is both the light of God and His essence.
The Mystery of Existence in Sunlight
Rumi advises silence; for words cannot fully express the profound secrets of the universe. The sun’s generous distribution is a kind of divine bounty, and to understand this bounty, one must attain inner stillness. To gaze (dikmek) here is not merely a physical act but also signifies the purification of the heart and focus on truth. Rumi, who states that everything in the universe is woven with love, indicates that understanding the secrets of this love is only possible through the eye of the heart; for such knowledge is revealed only to those worthy. Just as Solomon did not reveal the secrets of ants, nor could David speak with the mountain; because truth reveals itself to those who have reached a certain level of maturity and preparation.
Creativity and Harmony Born from Love
According to Rumi, all elements of the universe, such as the sky, earth, sea, and sun, are love. This love brings out their beauty and function: the purity of the sky, the light of the sun, the fertility of the sea. Without the absence of love, not even a single plant would grow on earth; for the source of creativity is love. Humanity too is part of this great chain of lovers, and when endowed with love, finds meaning in its existence. Rumi says that those who seek love will be rewarded with faithfulness (vefa); but first, one must become a lover, as to accept the burden of trust like the sky does, for a lover fears making mistakes. Love helps people transcend themselves, cover their flaws, and serve a greater purpose.
Inner Transformation and Attainment of Truth
Rumi’s teaching encourages inner transformation and attaining truth. To learn alchemy from the Prophet means to attain spiritual purity; this is possible only through dedicating oneself to God. Embracing difficulties with sorrow, welcoming joy, and surrendering to beauty are important steps in following the Rumi path. It is necessary to discipline the ego, purify oneself of worldly desires, and strive to unravel the secrets of love. Rumi emphasizes that true happiness can be found when a person sheds their own self and is molded by God’s love; thus, the individual overcomes worldly sorrows and begins to swim in the vast ocean of divine love. Rumi’s teachings continue to illuminate humanity in every age and spread a universal message of love.
