The Mystery of Creation and the Names of God
Mühiddin Ibn Arabi deeply contemplates the origins of existence and the secrets of creation in Futuhat al-Makkiyya. The Creator’s bringing existence from non-existence is not merely an action but is directly linked to the manifestation of His names. This manifestation becomes the direction and meaning of everything He created; thus, the connection between the eternality of the created beings and the ancient attributes of God is revealed. The meanings of God’s names such as al-Awwal (The First) and al-Akhir (The Last), carry sublimities that transcend the limits of human intellect, and the true meaning of these names can only be grasped through divine contemplation; this grasp requires acquiring means to settle in stations. The existence of differences among people stems from each servant possessing a unique name, which symbolizes the special bond between the servant and his Lord.
Essence and Attributes: The Balance Between Similitude and Transcendence
Ibn Arabi emphasizes the balance between similitude (tashbih) and transcendence (tanzih) in understanding God’s essence and attributes. The Creator appears as the Knowing (al-Alim), the Judging (al-Hakim), the Almighty (al-Qahir), and the Powerful (al-Qadir), but His essence is beyond these attributes, free from all comparison. When a servant attempts to look at God, he deviates from direction, because ultimately grasping God’s essence requires transcending all boundaries and directions. The servant who reaches this rank attains transcendence while God remains free from the highest degree of similitude; thus, a closer perspective on the truth of existence is obtained.
The Importance and Legacy of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him)
Futuhat al-Makkiyya emphasizes the importance and the secret that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) holds for humanity. He is defined as the Secret, purpose, and cause of existence of the universe; His guidance directs people towards the path of truth. In a divine observation by Ibn Arabi, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is seen standing before all prophets, his community gathered around him, surrounded by servant angels; this demonstrates his unique position and legacy for humanity. What is conveyed from this blessed existence guides on the way to God and serves as an inspiration for those seeking the path of truth.
