Third Article
It describes the dwelling places of the moon, which are fixed stars from the constellations, along with their names and shapes, the locations within the zodiacal sphere [37/a], and the rising and setting points at the fortieth degree latitude, together with their times.
O esteemed one! Know that in the Eternal Word of the Most High God, it is stated: “We have indeed appointed for the moon phases (orbits)” (Ya Sin 36/39), which are twenty-eight dwelling places located near the circle of the zodiacal signs, observed and determined fixed stars. As the moon moves westward within its own zodiacal sphere, passing through the middle of the Aries constellation, it is found with a different star each night and that star is accepted as a dwelling (menzil).
Because of its rapid movement, the moon traverses and completes the twelve constellations in twenty-eight days, returning to the same place. Therefore, the total number of dwellings (manâzil-i kamer) has been determined to be twenty-eight dwellings. The first dwelling it visits is called Sheretan, and the last stop is called Resha [480]. And the distance between these two dwellings is twelve degrees and fifty-two minutes, so each of the twelve constellations approximately contains two dwellings and one-third of a dwelling.

The decree is with the sun and moon
2- Praise be to God, blessings upon the Chosen One
The sun and moon make pleasing movements
3- Then, O people of understanding, listen! This book is according to the astronomers' words.

I have named the dwellings of the moon
5- The verses are all one hundred ninety[three]
A thousand six hundred sixty-five was the year, dear life
6- The celestial sphere is divided into twelve parts
Thirty shares are found in each part

When it finds the beginning of the balance.
67. When that day arrives and the sun is manifest on the horizon,
Let that point of the east be a sign.
68. And when it appears on the horizon at sunset,
Know that place well as the point of the west.
69. Take the two middle points from either side,
And mark the points of the south and north.
70. Estimate these four middle points,
And determine eight points from the horizon.
71. Assume the horizon to be three hundred and sixty degrees,
Therefore count the rising and setting [of the stars] from it.
72. Forty degrees on earth are the stations;
Let nature fall into this image from that horizon.
73. When half an hour of night has passed,
The appearance of the stations begins.
74. From the north of the point of the east,
And from the twentieth portion of the crescent moon.
75. Two sheratains are two high stars;
One is southern, and one is northern.
76. Count a span between the two,
Their distance is eighteen handbreadths.
77. Beside the southern [star] is a guide,
A small star is named Batrah.
78. Berah follows after the sheratain,
And Butin is the second station of the moon.
79. Look to the north of the point of the east,
Forty degrees distant from the points.
80. There are three small stars in a triangular form;
They found their abode before the constellation Swir’.
81. When two hours of night have passed,
The third station, Ulker, appears.
82. From the north of the point of the east,
And from its thirty-degree completion.
83. Six stars are in a honeycomb shape;
Twenty-four mansions belong to Swir’.
84. When that night is three hours and a quarter,
Nature falls into the fourth station, Debran.
85. Eighteen degrees north of the point,
The fifth star strikes [the horizon] at present.
86. It is five stars in a dal shape;
Their place is eight within the constellation Jawza’.
87. Let four and a half hours of night attack,
The fifth station will be Haq’s rising.
88. To the north of the point of the east, indeed,
It is the form of a point in the highest portion.
89. The name of Ra's-i Jabbar is this hidden star;
It appears twenty within the constellation Jawza’.
90. When five and a half hours of night have passed,
The sixth station, Hen’a, appears [38/b].
91. Look to the north of the point of the east,
Eighteen degrees distant from the points.
92. Two stars are great in the north and west;
Seretan is in its fifth portion, illuminated.
93. Wait five hours of night with observation,
You will see Zira’ as the seventh of the moon.
94. Go to the north of the point of the east,
Estimate forty degrees from the points.
95. There are two bright stars following;
The western [star] is known as Sha'ra-i Sham.
96. That first northern star is free from Seretan by eighteen [degrees].
97. If it were seven o’clock that night, complete,
You would see Nesre as the eightieth station.
98. Come to the north of the point of the east,
And take its twenty-fifth portion.
99. It is a fragment of stars, a cloud patch;
It is between four square stars.
100. Know it by the name Shura-i Yaman;
It belongs to the first Asad [Leo].
101. When eight hours of night have passed,
See Tarfe as the ninth station with your gaze.
102. To the north of the point of the east,
And from its thirtieth completion.
103. Two stars are one from Asad [Leo],
It is bright in the fifteenth of Leo.
104. When eight and a half hours of night have passed,
Ashir of the moon will appear to Jebh.
105. Take the north of the point of the east,
Until you reach its twenty-fifth portion.
106. Four stars are on a connecting line;
That southern [star] is great and bright.
107. The heart of Asad is a large star;
And one from Asad is twenty-eight.
108. If it were nine and a half o’clock that dawn,
Zebra is the eleventh, appearing there.
109. Go to the north of the point of the east,
Let it rest in the twenty-fifth portion.
110. The southern star runs;
It resides in fifteen Sombul [Virgo].
111. When it rises with that day, know this:
From the points, Sarfe is different in the north.
112. Sarfe is a star of the first degree of Kadir;
It is the twelfth station of the moon.
113. The surrounding fragments of stars have been marked;
Sombul is its final abode.
114. There are five bright stars in Ava;
They hold the balance at fifteen [degrees].
115. When thirteen stations have passed,
Its place is known from the east that night.
116. Know that time with the west;
Look to the west that night and mark it as a sign.
117. When one hour of night has passed,
The fourteenth station goes on the horizon.
118. Direct your gaze towards the west;
Know that Simak-i A’zeli sinks there.
119. The name is Fahz in Sombul, O soul;
Its image is twenty-five of the balance.
120. Until three hours of night enter,
Only fifteen Gafre will descend.
121. Take the north of the point of the west,
And remain at every twenty-eight degrees.
122. Three stars are on a connecting line;
It is the place of the first portion of Akreb [Scorpio].
123. And one name is Simak-i Ramih;
Its middle is Ramh and its fourth is that.
124. These four stations successively,
Will descend before the fifteenth.
125. Therefore, if a quarter hour of night is good,
Zeban will sink as the sixteenth.
126. Go to the south of the point of the west,
And there it sinks in the nineteenth portion.
127. Two stars are opposite and bright;
The distance between them is a span.
128. And one name is Pelle-i Mizan;
It is before the constellation Akreb [Scorpio].
129. When two hours of that dark night have passed,
That time, Iklil sinks as the seventeenth.
130. Look to the south of the point of the west,
Eighteen degrees distant from the points.
131. There is a place with no connection; three stars;
Its brightness has become the face of Akreb [Scorpio].
132. Akreb is one name also, O friend;
It is in the twenty-fourth place within the constellation Akreb [Scorpio].
133. Wait two and a half hours that night;
The eighteenth heart of Akreb sinks there.
134. Find the south of the point of the west;
Find its thirty-third western portion.
135. Three stars are on a connecting line;
It is the goal of the sixth of the constellation Qaws [Sagittarius].
136. And with the heart of Akreb, it proceeds thus:
The ninth station sinks there.
137. Look to the south of the point of the west,
Forty-nine degrees distant from the points.
138. Two stars are bright in the north and west;
They have stopped at the twentieth of Qaws [Sagittarius].
139. Wait four hours that night sitting;
Bistum will sink as Ne’ayim.
140. Look to the south of the point of the west,
It is its thirty-third portion on the path.
141. Four stars are small and large;
They settled in the first part of Jady [Capricorn].
142. Also, when five hours of night have passed,
Twenty-one Belde will be known.
143. Take the south of the point of the west,
Until you reach its twenty-eight degrees.
144. It is a cut that becomes simple;
It makes a covering around the stars.
145. And one name is for that covering, O soul;
It has made its abode in the middle of the constellation Jady [Capricorn].
146 – If it were seven hours of night, the scent of paradise.
147 – Take the point of the setting sun’s southern edge,
And from there remain in the eighteenth division.
148 – Two stars are in the north, most prominent,
One small star bears the name Ganem with them.
149 – The Sābiḥ offers it as a sacrifice,
The first of Delv is its dwelling place.
150 – Let that night be free of weariness for seven and a half hours,
Twenty-seven Belī’s will descend.
151 – How is the point of the setting sun's southern edge?
Count from the point twenty-three degrees.
152 – Two bright stars are nearby,
One small star is solitary, estranged.
153 – That small star is close to that northern direction,
The fourteenth of Delv is its dwelling place.
154 – If nine hours pass in that night,
Twenty-four Saud will depart at that time.
155 – Find the point of the setting sun's southern edge,
The seventh division is on the horizon for it.
156 – Upon a connecting line are three stars,
In the constellation Delv, the eighteenth [39/b].
157 – Gaze upon that night for eleven and a half hours,
To the twenty-fifth Ahbīh at dawn.
158 – The point of the setting sun is estranged and southern,
Three stars form a triangle.
159 – The fourth Sa‘d is aligned with it in name,
Its fifth place is within the constellation Hūt.
160 – Look towards the east and grant success that evening,
Investigate each one’s altitude.
161 – He who precedes and follows, both,
The natural things precede the setting of the sun.
162 – When it approaches evening by an hour and a half,
Both have already risen together.
163 – From the northern edge of the rising sun,
From the completeness of the twenty-fifth division.
164 – A branch is apparent within it before,
Its origin is a star southern in essence.
165 – The distance between them is like a spear,
Hūt to fifteen is its stopping point for that difference.
166 – Go to the northern edge of the rising sun,
And estimate thirty-one degrees.
167 – A later light will arise there,
Its difference will precede its origin in appearance.
168 – Two stars whose distance is like a spear,
The difference in Hūt is brilliantly radiant at the end.
169 – Look towards the east to find the place of evening prayer,
Twenty-eight Rešā has risen.
170 – Remaining for an hour until sunset,
That comfort will have risen from the east.
171 – From the northern edge of the rising sun,
From the completeness of the thirtieth division.
172 – Two stars that are eastern and western,
Are like a ship in the array of constellations.
173 – Its shape is like an almond,
And it is presently within Hamel fifteen.
174 – If it were at the midpoint of the constellation Hamel,
That image would be distant from the sun.
175 – The first station is Šarāteyn,
And with this arrangement, until Rešā.
176 – When the moon completes twenty-eight days,
It will traverse all these stations.
177 – With those twenty-eight days of night,
The sun passes one degree per day.
178 – When it becomes twenty-nine and a half days,
The sun and moon will find agreement.
179 – Because of this, a month is accounted as twenty-nine
days, the other month thirty.
180 – Afterward, whatever desire is fulfilled in any night,
This count of stations will be completed.
181 – Knowing the night, to which degree of the sun it belongs,
Which sign it is in that night.
182 – Make a calculation from the beginning of the measure,
How much has passed since then for the sun.
183 – In one and a half hours at that time, a sign passes,
The stations rise and set beforehand.
184 – Thus, every fifteen nights, an hour
Advances with Sābitān in speed.
185 – For the Sun travels two chairs’ worth each day,
Passing to the east, it goes towards sunset.
186 – Whatever passes is compared to this,
All of it is found upon this calculation.
187 – When the sun passes into the first Hamel,
The command becomes reversed and easy to come by.
188 – The star apparent from the rising sun’s edge,
Is known by its western setting.
189 – What is declared from its western edge at this time,
Must be known from its eastern rise then.
190 – Wherever it rises, it sets opposite;
Wherever it sets, it rises opposite.
191 – When the stations are known with certainty,
Estimate the twelve signs from this.
192 – Until a wandering and fixed star becomes apparent,
Knowing which constellation and which star it has made its dwelling.
193 – May God know the stars! Gaze upon the heavens, reflect on God.
27. As to the Burç Oğlak (the Ram), let it be brightened. That is the beginning of the chill of Zemheri (late autumn/early winter).
28. At that hour of the night, it will be fifteen [hours]. The hour of the day will scarcely reach nine.
29. Then the night takes six hours from the day. This decision remains for three days and three nights.
30. Afterwards, the days become progressively longer. Thus, the Sun reaches the beginning of the sign of Aries (Ram).
31. When the Sun is transferred to the beginning of Aries, then day and night are equal at that time.
32. Then, from sunrise to sunset, it will be twelve hours without deficiency.
33. From the end of the day until its rising, it is entirely night; it is also twelve hours, not less than that.
34. And again, the days become progressively longer. Thus, the day reaches the beginning of Cancer (Crab).
35. The hour of the day becomes fifteen in a day. The hour of the night scarcely reaches nine.
36. Then the night takes six hours from the day. This decision remains for three days and three nights.
37. Afterwards, the night lengthens; it increases little by little, until the Sun arrives at the beginning of Libra (Scales).
38. When the day arrives at the beginning of Libra, then day and night are perfectly equal.
39. For the beginning of Aries is one with this [equality]. East and west are a place for both in unity.
40. Again, the night lengthens; it increases little by little. The Sun journeys onward to the beginning of the Oğlak (Ram).
41. This turning of the Sun repeats itself once a year. This cycle continues like a round sphere.
42. How long is the day on the fourth sphere? And the Moon also is so there.
43. On the first sphere, the Moon is a mirror of the night. From that intense existence, it is only a mirror.
44. For the light of the Sun is always abiding. The light of the Moon is only dependent upon the Sun.
45. The shape of the Moon is round and its face is dark. Only its side facing the Sun is illuminated.
46. For the place of the Moon is between the Sun and the Earth. Its face towards the Earth is its darkness.
47. On the following night, a crescent appears. The luminous face of the Moon is visible to us faintly.
48. The Moon moves away from the Sun day by day. Its face towards the Earth becomes clear.
49. If the Moon enters its fourth station (phase), then the Earth remains close between the Sun and the Moon.
50. How pleasing is the meeting of the Sun and the Moon! The Moon becomes a perfect full moon, its light visible.
51. The Moon is a mirror of the Sun; this is the camera (full moon). It takes away the darkness of the night, making it entirely light.
52. As the Moon approaches the Sun, it darkens day by day. Its dark side then becomes apparent little by little.
53. When the Moon and the Sun meet together, the Moon’s obscure face turns towards us.
54. This operation thus cycles once a month. The crescent and full moon change in this manner.
55. The Sun passes through only twelve signs in one year. The Moon traverses these stations in thirty days.
56. The Moon constantly circles from west to east. Thus, it reaches thirteen degrees of the Earth each day.
57. When the Sun and the Moon coincide, the crescent appears before the Sun on the following night.
58. The Sun passes twelve degrees per day. These twelve signs measure twenty-eight [degrees].
59. In this case, there are twenty-eight stations. The sign of each is a star.
60. Each sign has a name and a place. O friend, let us now count them in order.
61. Şerateyn, Butin, and Pervin, who possess luminosity. Debrân, Hek’a, Men’a, and Zira‘.
62. Nesre, Tarfe, Cephe, and Zebre, Sarfe, Avâ, Simak, and Gafre.
63. Afterwards comes Zebâna, and also İklîl. Know Kelb and Neâyim well.
64. Belde, Zâbih, Bel’, Suûd, and Ehbiyâ. There it was first and last, know that Reşâ (a star).
65. If you wish to know the stations of the Moon in the sky, observe the bright Sun.
66. Observe also the point where the Sun rises. If it finds it, know that it is the beginning of Libra.
67. Behold, on that day, when the Sun becomes apparent on the horizon, make that the sign of the eastern point.
68. And on that day, when the Sun sets on the horizon, remember that place as the setting point of the day in the sky.
69. Take its middle from both sides. Take the southern and northern points as signs.
70. Find the middles of these four directions. Appoint eight points from the horizon.
71. Let the circumference of the horizon be assumed to be three hundred sixty degrees. Count east and west with those [degrees].
72. When the stations reach the fortieth degree of latitude, then the day rises and sets from the horizon according to this image.
73. Until the night passes half an hour earlier. The beginning of the stations is revealed.
74. From the north of the eastern point, and from the crescent of the twentieth degree of latitude.
75. Şerateyn are two high stars. One is in the south, one is in the north.
76. Let the distance between them be counted as a zirâ‘ (unit of measurement). In twenty-eight degrees, there lies Aries for them.
77. The one that is to the south of these is fixed. A small star whose name is Batıh (Western Star).
78. Berâh follows after Şerateyn. The second station of the Moon is the star Butin.
79. Look towards the north of the eastern point. Forty degrees distant from the point.
80. There are three small stars in a triangular shape. They have settled before the sign of Taurus (Bull).
81. When that night passes, two hours pass. The third station, Ülker (a star cluster), appears.
82. From the north of the eastern point, and from its complete thirty degrees.
83. It is six stars in the shape of a wheat stalk. It falls from the twenty-fourth degree of Taurus.
84. That night passes three hours and a quarter. The fourth station, Debrân, rises.
85. Eighteen degrees north of the point. Five stars rise at that time.
86. They are five stars in the shape of a branch. Their place is in the eighth part of Gemini (Twins).
87. Let there be an interval of four and a half hours that night. The fifth station, Hek’a, rises.
88. Towards the north of the eastern point, almost in the eighth part, like the points of Şın (a letter).
89. Three invisible stars named Re’s-i Cabbâr appear apparent on the twentieth degree of Gemini.
90. If that night passes five and a half hours, the sixth station, Hen’a, appears.
91. Look towards the north of the eastern point. Eighteen degrees distant from the point.
92. Two large stars, from the east and west. They shine in the fifth part of Cancer.
93. Wait awake for five hours that night. See Zirâ‘ in the seventh station of the Moon.
94. Go towards the north of the eastern point. Estimate forty degrees from the point.
95. The first two are bright stars. Behind them, from the west, they are called the poets of Sham (Syria).
96. The first of these is a star in the north. It is eighteen degrees beyond Cancer.
97. If the hour of that night is seven complete; the eighth station, Nesre, appears.
98-Go to the north of the eastern point, and take the twenty-fifth meridian as well.
99-It appears like a fragment of a cloud; four stars are arranged in a square formation.
100-Their name is known as the Yemen poets. And they are within the first part of Leo, indeed.
101-If that night advances eight hours; Tarfe will appear in the eighth station, observe it.
102-From the north of the eastern point, and from the perfection of the thirtieth portion.
103-Two stars, one belonging to Leo. It appears in the fifteenth part of Leo.
104-If that night advances eight and a half hours; the tenth station of the Moon; Cephe will be revealed.
105-Take the north of the eastern point. Until you reach the twenty-fifth meridian.
106-Upon a zigzagging line, four stars. They shine in the southern hemisphere always.
107-It was the heart of Leo, a great star. And one of them is from Leo, twenty-eight [degrees].
108-If the hour is nine and a half, that night. Zebre rises in the eleventh station.
109-Go to the north of the eastern point. Settle at the twenty-fifth portion.
110-This swiftly flowing star shines in the south. The fifteenth part of Virgo is its dwelling place.
111-Because the rising day begins with it. From the point Sarfe, from Avâ forty degrees.
112-Sarfe is the first star of the Cluster of Qadr. It is the twelfth station of the Moon.
113-The sea of stars has encompassed it. The end of Virgo has become its abode.
114-Avâ consists of five bright stars. It holds the fifteenth part of Libra as its homeland.
115-Because from the thirteen stations, its location is known from its east that night.
116-The rest are in the west at that time. Look to the west that night and mark it.
117-Because when an hour passes and that night. The fourteenth station proceeds towards the horizon.
118-Look kindly toward the western point. The Fish of Azeri sinks there, know this.
119-Its name is Fahz of Virgo, O soul! Its image is twenty-five of Libra.
120-Until that night passes three hours, the station Gafre only rises.
121-Go to the north of the western point. Remain at every twenty-eighth degree.
122-Upon a line like an arch, three stars; the first part of Scorpio is their place.
123-And another name for it is the Fish of the Sword. Its center pierces like a spear.
124-It is so in succession within four stations. It descends before the fifteenth.
125-If a quarter of an hour passes that night; Zebâna sinks in the sixteenth station.
126-Go to the south of the western point. It sinks in its nineteenth part from there.
127-Two stars shine opposite each other. The distance between them is like a spear.
128-And another name for it is the Cage of Libra. The front of Scorpio has become its abode.
129-Because two hours of darkness pass that night. Then, the Crown sinks in the seventeenth [station].
130-Look to the south of the western point. From the point, thirty degrees distant.
131-Three stars upon the same line, not dissimilar, became the front of Scorpio’s light.
