From the Tyranny of the Ego to Divine Light
Selected from Mevlânâ Celaleddin-i Rûmi’s Divan-ı Kebir, these passages reveal the complexities within the human inner world and the path towards enlightenment through divine love. Expressing the desire to escape the captivity of the ego and reach the Divine Light by transcending the limitations of self, Mevlânâ states, ‘The ego that says “I am God” becomes like Mansûr,’ emphasizing that attaining truth is a challenging and arduous process. In this process, the individual must annihilate themselves, their ego must disappear; for only then can the light of divine love be given space, and the heart fills with a light transcending layers.
The Waters of Life in the Depths of the Heart
In Mevlana’s teachings, beyond the limitations of the external world, there lies an infinite source hidden within the depths of the heart. This source is called ‘ab-ı hayat,’ representing the path to immortality. To reach this source beyond the heart requires effort – digging the stream and ensuring the flow of water. This metaphor emphasizes the importance of patience and perseverance in spiritual seeking; because attaining truth is not an easy journey. It requires inner transformation and a continuous learning process, which means overcoming obstacles within our hearts and revealing our true potential.
The Paradoxes of Love and Union with Truth
Mevlana deeply explores the conflict between love and reason within the inner world. The soul, oscillating between the passion of love and the boundaries of rational thought, is in a kind of internal war. This conflict requires the individual to experience both emotional intensity and logical clarity simultaneously, which can cause distress. However, according to Mevlânâ, the power of love makes it possible to transcend reason and go beyond the known. The person who reaches truth through love overcomes all obstacles and attains inner peace; thus, the secrets within their heart are revealed and a spiritual journey begins.
