Fourth Article
Regarding a person's conversation and maintaining closeness (preserving the vitality of affection and devotion) with their parents, its manners and protocols are explained.
O esteemed one! Know that the people of refinement have said: For someone whose parents are alive, the manners and protocols for conversing with them and showing consideration towards them are fifteen:
1-Listening to their words.
2-Obeying their commands.
3-Not sitting without their permission.
4-Waiting for them to rise, standing.
5-Passing before them on a path (making way).
6-Not raising one’s voice above theirs.
7-Not calling them by name.
8-When they call, going to them and saying “Please enter.”
9-Promptly attending to their service (the task they request).
10-Being eager in gaining their pleasure.
11-Supporting and treating them with respect.
12-Not withholding kindness and beneficence from them.
13-Not looking at them with anger.
14-Not showing displeasure on one’s face; rather, being cheerful towards them and speaking sweetly to please them.
15-Not going abroad (traveling) unless they command it, and not separating oneself from them.
Therefore, it is essential for everyone that they converse and maintain closeness with their parents according to these manners and protocols, serve them with respect, and seek to gain their pleasure.
