THE CHAPTER OF PURITY · 13 – A PERSON URINATING INTO A VESSEL AT NIGHT
According to the report of the mother of Hukeyme bint Umayme bint Rukayka:
There was a container made of date palm wood beneath the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, where he would relieve himself in small ablutions [on some nights].
**Explanation:**
It is not correct to collect urine in a vessel. However, it is permissible for those who are ill or unable to reach the lavatory due to their condition to do so. Otherwise, doing this without necessity is meaningless.
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, collecting his urine in such a container on some nights likely relates to the days before private latrines were constructed in Medina. Or it is probable that he did so on nights when he was unwell and unable to go outside.
In the hadith text, “aydan” refers to a date palm tree; it is a term for a date palm tree with stripped branches and long trunks. (Bezl’ul-Mechûd vol. 1 p. 65)
