This explains the closeness of the four kinds of love with one another and the reasons for their sometimes merging.
Noble one! Know that the friends of Allah have said: The love of Essence, the love of actions, the love of attributes, and the love of works are all intertwined and related to each other in some way.
The love of Essence is what flows between the Divine Being and the servant. This love is expressed in the noble verse, “They love Him, and He loves them” (Ma’idah 5/54). For the devotion in that love is directed only towards the Essence itself, not to other attributes. However, from the side of the servant, the love of Essence encompasses all the degrees of the other kinds of love below it. Because the attributes of the Most High are identical with His Essence in terms of manifestation and vision (shuhud), and they are closely connected to the Divine Essence intellectually. Therefore, it is impossible for the Most High’s glorious Essence to be separate from His essential attributes, nor can such a thing be conceived. His possible attributes are established upon His pure Essence and bear witness to His glorious existence. Thus, whoever loves the pure Essence of the Most High truly loves His eternal Face, and knows that the Face of the Divine Being is the pure Essence which contains all of its attributes. For this reason, he who attains to this love becomes a knowing, perfect one. The grace of the Lord appears as coercion in his sight, and His wrath also becomes one with it. The majesty and beauty of the Most High become equal to him. Because he knows that all these manifestations are the perfect attributes of That Beloved. As is stated in the following couplet:
Couplet
Every thing comes from the beloved, is lovable.
Even anger is like grace in the doctor’s hand.
As in this poem, everything and every work of the Beloved is lovable to one who loves Him with his Essence. Because all these actions and works belong to His pure Essence. However, those actions have been attributed to the glorious Essence through attributes. For actions always emanate from those attributes. The things produced (works) are ascribed to the Essence through actions. For works come into being only through actions. Thus, love of the Essence becomes love of actions. Because the lover who attains this degree of love can perceive the true agent within those actions while loving them. He does not even consider His causing him pain as a torment, but finds delight in approaching the glorious Essence through it.
He who loves the Essence also loves the works. For he knows that all works are from Him and with Him, and he sees nothing except That Beloved in the mirror of insight.
As for the love of the Divine Being towards the servant, this does not necessitate any of the other kinds of love. [283/a] Because the servant is created from light and darkness, and contains all conditions of all creation. Therefore, he has certain actions that arise from the seven powers of his animal soul, which are produced according to the necessity of his human being.
For the places where those actions emerge are the attributes of the soul, which govern and err in this visible world through feelings. He also has thoughts (hawatir) arising from his heart and spirit, and these give pleasure and tranquility according to their natures through angelic and merciful inspiration. Thus, the servant’s essential being is not independent of the combination of actions and attributes, so that his Essence becomes beloved, which would necessitate that his attributes, actions, works, and transient states (a'raz) also become beloved.
For it sometimes happens that the Divine Being loves the servant’s Essence but does not love his actions. As He says in the Noble Quran: “He frowned and turned away because of the coming of the blind man” (Abasa 80/1-2), announcing that His Beloved did not love turning away from that blind man. The Most Exalted Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Sometimes the Divine Being loves a servant but does not love his actions, and sometimes He loves his actions but does not love himself."
Sometimes the Divine Being may love the servant’s Essence but not accept his attributes.
As He spoke to His Beloved: “You feared people; whereas Allah is more deserving of being feared” (Ahzab 33/37), announcing that fearing people was not fitting for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). If this were not so, certain things would not be considered sins or offenses for servants. However, this essential love leads to the servant’s forgiveness and attainment of divine grace.
As for the servant's love towards the attributes of Allah, it naturally necessitates his love of actions and works. For these two kinds of love are an indispensable condition and a necessary consequence of the love of attributes. This kind of love does not necessitate or encompass the existence of the essential love mentioned above. Because he who does not pass through the veils of the attributes remains at a certain station, deprived of attaining the degree of essential love. Just as one who loves the attribute of “Bestower of Favors” (mun’im) flees from the attribute of "Avenger" (muntakim), whereas He Who bestows favors is Himself the Avenger. Thus, that person remains separate from essential love and stays at the degree of loving only attributes.

Bir bilür kahr u lutfı ehl-i kemâl
Günümüz Türkçesiyle
Celal ve cemâlin kaynağı birdir. Kâmil insana göre, lütf ile kahır birdir.
Cenâb-ı Hakk’ın kulun sıfatlarına muhabbet etmesine gelince; onun
varlığı (yukarıda sayılan) muhabbetlerin hiç birini gerekli kılmaz. Çünkü
Hak teala Kelâm-ı Kadîm’inde; “ Allah sabredenleri sever ” (Âl-i İmrân
Kulun fiillere muhabbet etmesi, eserlere muhabbeti gerekli kılar, diye
eyleyen Fa‘‘âl-i Mutlak’ı bulur. O henüz kalp makamına yükselememiş ve
Hakk’ın
sıfatlarını
müşâhade
edememiştir.
O’nun
temiz
Bazen iki taraftan sadece birinde muhabbet
tecellî edip diğerinde olmayabilir.
Çünkü birbirini seven iki insanın başlangıçta fiilleri farklı iken,
gönüllerine doğan hâllerin değişmesiyle tabiatlerinde de birtakım
değişmeler meydana gelir. Buna bağlı olarak âdetleri de değişime uğrar.
Muhabbetlerinde de artma ve eksilme meydana gelir.
Mevlâ’ya muhabbetin son noktası Hak aşkıdır. Aşk, hiç bir değişime
uğramaksızın bakîdir. Her türlü hayırlı neticeler, ihsanlar onun bereketiyle
olur.
