Love's Twenty-First Article
Concerning the states of love, its miracles, the lover’s warmth of heart, and his reproach (self-reproach), the beloved’s comfort, concealment, and safety.
O esteemed one! It is known that the friends of Allah have said: Love is the ultimate end and final point of affection. It is guidance and grace from God to His friends. Gowns-of-hearts [beautiful women] desire lovers wholeheartedly. Every beloved is certainly a quarry for their lover. Though the thirsty one first seeks water, water also yearns for the thirsty one. Love is light upon light within the soul and heart; bride and groom are hidden therein.
Divine love never finds tranquility nor remains in a single state. Therefore, the lover’s soul is in a state of madness. The fire of love has consumed the lover. Thus, the lover abandons lengthy deliberation on material causes and preoccupation with phrases.
Secrets are sent to the lover's heart; there words and visions intermingle within him. The lover’s path is distinct from every path. For his path is unity and his doctrine is the Essence of God.
Love is a helpful telescope that makes the unfamiliar known, brings nearness to what is distant. Love is a perfect guide with whom countless souls become united. The lover considers himself insignificant and abased so that he may honor and exalt his beloved. The lover only thrives through love; he does not submit to varying times (evkāt-i muhtelife). Pain and sorrow are like honeyed sweets to the lover. Whereas, for the rational person, everything is a trial. The sustenance of the lover’s soul is the pleasing sound in his melodies.
Nazm (Poem)
1. The believers said, “The traces of paradise beautify every foul sound.”
2. We were all parts of Adam and heard those melodies in paradise.
3. Though water and clay gave us doubt, we remembered something from them for a while.
4. Therefore, the sustenance of lovers is the heavens. For there is a thought of gathering in the heavens.
5. Music strengthens the dreams of the heart, even causing forms to appear from a horn and flute.
(Translation of Nazm)
1. The believers say: “The signs of paradise beautify every unpleasant sound.”
2. We were all parts of Adam and heard those sounds in paradise.
3. Though water and clay gave us doubt, we remembered something from them for a while.
4. Therefore, the sustenance of lovers is the heavens. For there is a thought of gathering in the heavens.
5. Music strengthens the dreams of the heart, even causing forms to appear from a horn and flute.
In Turkish vernacular:
A knowledge was revealed to me from your beauty’s book; a hundred thousand intellects are powerless from its chapter and section.
It is among God's wisdom that He has created people in love and inclination towards one another within their fate and destiny. Even though two bodies may be distant and unaware, there are ways from heart to heart by which they find each other at every moment. Just as the lamps of two candles are separate, yet their light mingles.
Whoever is inclined toward union, his beloved surely loves him and desires union with him. But the lover’s love sickens his body, weakens it. The beloved's love nourishes him; it gives strength and grace to his body. If there are lights shining like lightning in a heart, know that there is a sun of affection there.
The beloved is not the image of the body, but the essence of the soul. For it is evident and clear that the soulless body, which is merely an image, is not loved by the spirit at the time of death. Therefore, the lover of form is in a way unfortunate, deluded. The lover of essence, however, is fortunate, for his love is true.
Those gowns-of-hearts who are the physicians of souls desire to inquire about their patients and attend to them. If they shy away from fame and renown, they send news to the beloved with an excuse. Otherwise, they do not forget them but constantly imagine them. For no beloved is unaware of his lover.
If the love of God has doubled in your heart, know that He loves you as well. How can a hand’s voice be heard unless it responds? The thirsty one weeps, “Where is the water to quench my thirst?” And the water calls out, "Where is the thirsty one?" This thirst within our soul is an unparalleled attraction. We exist for Him, and He exists for us.
In the world, those who seek what they desire among people, animals, plants, and inanimate beings are surely lovers who have not attained their desires. Those who do not attain their desires go to those who do. That desire draws them toward itself. But an electric body (kehrūbā) is a lover who does not turn to anyone; small objects of refuse readily approach it without effort.
The beloved’s inclination is hidden from everyone. The lover's inclination, however, is so openly declared that he would announce it with a thousand drums and flutes. In every heart there is a lover for the beloved. Azrā’l’s heart holds only Wāmiq.
Whoever loves God, vanishes like a shadow in the sun. A weak gnat, a simple breeze, who is a lover of God, is carried away by a strongly blowing wind. When a storm blows, conditions change and affairs are overturned.
The ultimate end of love is to be eternal with the beloved. But the beginning of the lover’s eternity is annihilation (fenā). Love is so virtuous that it renders one's own existence superfluous.
Ignorance of the darkness of desires and unawareness of the loftiness of love have made man exceedingly unjust and exceedingly ignorant. As a rabbit attacks a lion by mistreating its desire, and due to ignorance, throws itself into his lap.
