IMPURITY SECTION · 103 – BEING WITH A WOMAN WHO IS MENSTRUATING
Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: A Jewish woman would be driven out of her house when she was menstruating; they would not eat with her, drink with her, or sit in the same house as her. They asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) about women who are menstruating. Then Allah (Exalted and Most High) revealed the verse: "(They ask you about menstruation. Say: It is a purification; so refrain from marital relations with them until they are clean.)" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) said, "Live with them in the same house and do everything except intimacy." Thereupon the Jews said, “This man [Muhammad] wants to abandon something of our practices, and he only wants to oppose us.” Usaid ibn Hudayr and Ubada ibn Bishr (may Allah be pleased with them) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah, the Jews say such things." The Messenger of Allah’s (peace and blessings upon him) face reddened until we thought he was angry at them. They had left when they encountered milk that had been presented as a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) sent someone among his companions to give them some of the milk to drink, so they realized that he was not angry with them. [202]
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrated: “While I was in a state of menstrual impurity, I would bite the meat on a bone and give it to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) would then apply his mouth to the place where my mouth had been (and tear off the meat with his mouth). He would drink the liquid and give me the vessel, applying his mouth to the place where I had drunk.”
Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) related that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings upon him) would read (the Quran) while reclining his head upon my lap [when I was menstruating].
COMMENTARY: An-Nawawi states: This honorable hadith indicates that it is permissible for a woman experiencing menstrual bleeding to recite the Quran.
