PURITY SECTION · 62 – CLEANLINESS
Abbād reported: He told me, on the authority of Aws ibn Abi Aws as-Sakafi, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed ablution and wiped over his slippers and ankles. Abbād said: I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, come to the wells of a people which were connected by chimneys. (The Mizae refers to the vessel for performing ablution.) The narration of Musaddad does not mention the interconnected wells and the water vessel. Then Musaddad and ‘Ubayd agreed, stating: “The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, performed ablution and wiped over his slippers and ankles.”
[Explanation:]
Kizama: This means wells connected by chimneys. Many wells are connected by chimneys, from which the water flows out onto the ground from the final well.
Mizae: This refers to a vessel used for performing ablution, containing the water for that purpose.
When Abbād said, “I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, come to the wells of a people,” he meant the vessels used for ablution, the water jugs.
Regarding the wiping over the slippers and ankles of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, it can be understood that he washed his feet, then rubbed them with his hand to dry them. He then wiped the slippers with his hand. Alternatively, it could be said that first the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, did this, and then the washing of the feet and the hadith "Transform into ashes are the dry heels" abrogated the ruling regarding wiping over the feet and slippers. According to the four madhhabs, wiping over bare or shod feet is not permissible.
