SECTION ON PRAYER · 50 – GOING TO PRAYER IN THE DARKNESS

561 – From Buraida (may Allah be pleased with him):
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Give glad tidings of a perfect light on the Day of Resurrection to those who walk to the mosques in the darkness."
[371]
EXPLANATION
Those who go to the mosque by tearing through the darkness in this world will have their eternal realm illuminated; in return for the darkness, a light will be bestowed upon them.

"Command your child to pray when he reaches the age of seven; if he does not pray at the age of ten, discipline him lightly." [332]
Ibn Ishaq narrated in the section on the adhān from Zuhri: "Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great." Maʿmar and Yunus also narrated from Zuhri on this subject: "Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great." They did not repeat it a second time. [333]
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded Bilal to say the adhān in pairs and the iqāmah singly. In the narration of Hammad, he added only the phrase "except for the word of iqāmah." [334]
Shuʿba says: I did not hear anything else from Abu Jaʿfar except this hadith. [335]
(Sudāʾī) says: When the time for the morning adhān entered, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded me, and I called the adhān. I asked, "Shall I make the iqāmah, O Messenger of Allah?" He would look towards the east, towards the dawn, and say, "No." When the dawn broke, he dismounted (from his camel), renewed his ablution, turned to me, and caught up with his companions. (That is, he performed ablution.) When Bilal wanted to make the iqāmah, the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him, "The adhān was called by the brother of the Suda tribe. Whoever calls the adhān should make the iqāmah." So I made the iqāmah. [336]
It is written for the one who is present in the congregation as if he has performed twenty-five prayers. The mistakes committed between them are forgiven." [337]
"When the call to prayer is made, Satan flees with a fart so as not to hear the adhān. When the adhān is finished, he returns. When the muʾadhdhin makes the iqāmah, he turns his back and flees. When the iqāmah is finished, he returns again, and even places thoughts between a person and his nafs (the lower self), saying, 'Remember this, remember that,' until he reminds the person of things he did not have in mind. He continues until the person becomes confused about how many rakʿahs he has prayed." [338]
"O Allah, guide the imams, forgive the muʾadhdhins," he said. [339]
Musa says: Bilal once went out to Batha and called the adhān. When he came to the phrases "Come to prayer, come to success," he turned his neck to the right and left, but did not turn his chest. Then he came to the tent and took out the staff of the Messenger of God. The narrator Musa related the hadith. [340]
521 – From Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The supplication made between the adhān and the iqāmah is not rejected." [341]
522 – From Abu Saʿid al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "When you hear the adhān, say as the muʾadhdhin says." [342]
Then ask Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, for al-wasīla for me. Al-wasīla is a station in Paradise which only one of Allah's servants will attain. I hope that I will be that person. Whoever asks Allah for al-wasīla for me, my intercession will be due for him." [343]
525 – From Saʿd ibn Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whoever, upon hearing the adhān, says: 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, He has no partner or equal, and that Muhammad is His servant and Messenger. Allah is my Lord, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is my Prophet, and I am content with Islam as my religion,' his sins will be forgiven." [344]
When the muʾadhdhin says, 'Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great,' he also says, 'Allah is Most Great.' When the muʾadhdhin says, 'There is no god but Allah,' he also says, 'There is no god but Allah.' He will enter Paradise." [345]
529 – From Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whoever, upon hearing the adhān, says: 'O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and the established prayer, grant Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) al-wasīla and virtue, and raise him to the praiseworthy station which You have promised him,' my intercession will be due for him on the Day of Resurrection." [346]
He taught me to say: "O Allah, this adhān is the voice of Your invitation at the coming of Your night and the departure of Your day. Forgive me." [347]
531 – From Uthman ibn Abi al-ʿAs (may Allah be pleased with him): He said to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), "O Messenger of Allah, appoint me as the imam for my own people." The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "You are their imam. Act according to the condition of their weak ones, and find a muʾadhdhin who does not take a wage for his adhān." [348]
Abu Dawud says: This hadith was not narrated from Ayyub except by Hammad ibn Salama. [349]
(Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum, although he was blind, was the muʾadhdhin of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). [350]
We were in the mosque with Abu Hurayra. When the muʾadhdhin called the adhān for the afternoon prayer, a man went out and left. Abu Hurayra said, "That man has disobeyed Abu al-Qasim, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." [351]
Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) would call the adhān and then wait. When he saw the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) come out, he would make the iqāmah for prayer. [352]
Hisham al-Dastuwaʾi said: Yahya wrote this hadith for me. This hadith was also narrated by Muʿawiya ibn Sallam and Ali al-Mubarak from Yahya, and in their narration they added: "Do not hasten until you see me." [353]
Abu Dawud said: No one except Maʿmar mentioned the phrase (qad kharajtū). Ibn ʿUyaynah narrated it from Maʿmar, but did not mention the phrase "when I have definitely come out." [354]
541 – From Abu Hurayra (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would have the iqāmah made for prayer. Before the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) took his place, the congregation would take their places. [355]
I asked Thabit al-Bunani about the situation of a person who speaks after the iqāmah has been made for prayer. He told me: Anas ibn Malik informed me as follows. (Anas) said: The iqāmah was made for prayer, and a man opposed our Prophet and kept him from the prayer for a while. [356]
The iqāmah was made for prayer. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) was in a corner of the mosque, talking to someone. He did not stand for prayer until the congregation had fallen asleep. [357]
By congregation, what is meant is prayer in congregation. [358]
The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded that the iqāmah be made for prayer and another person be ordered to lead the prayer, and then said, "I considered going to a people who do not come to prayer, taking with me some men carrying bundles of wood, and burning their houses while they are inside." [359]
I said to Yazid ibn Asam, "O father of Awf, did our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mean the Friday prayer or another prayer?" He said, "O Yazid ibn Yazid, may my ears be deaf if I did not hear Abu Hurayra narrate this from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). But he did not specify Friday or another prayer." [360]
Continue to perform these five daily prayers in congregation wherever the adhān is called. Performing these prayers in congregation is among the sunan al-hudā (established practices of guidance). Surely Allah (the Exalted) made the sunan al-hudā sharia (the sacred law) for His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah, I did not see anyone stay behind from the congregation except those whose hypocrisy was manifest. By Allah, I saw that a person who was unable to walk would be brought between two men until he stood in the row. There is not a single one among you who does not have a mosque in his house; if you were to abandon the mosques and pray in your homes, you would have abandoned the sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If you abandon the sunnah of your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), you would surely be ungrateful." [361]
Abu Ishaq narrated from Mighra. [362]
Abu Dawud said: Qasim al-Jarmi narrated this hadith from Sufyan in this way. However, in his narration, the phrase "Hasten to the congregation" is not present. [363]
"These two prayers are the heaviest upon the hypocrites. If you knew the reward for these two prayers, you would come to them even if you had to crawl on your knees. In my view, the first row is like the row of angels; if you knew the virtue of the first row, you would compete for it. A person's prayer with another is better than praying alone, and praying with two is better than with one. The more the congregation, the more beloved it is to Allah." [364]
"Whoever performs the night prayer in congregation, it is as if he has spent half the night in worship. Whoever performs the night and morning prayers in congregation, it is as if he has spent the whole night in prayer." [365]
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "The one whose house is farther from the mosque receives a greater reward than the one who is closer." [366]
There was a man among the people of Medina who prayed facing the qibla, and there was no one whose house was farther from the mosque than his. He never missed the congregational prayer in the mosque. I said to him, "Why don't you get a donkey to ride during the heat and darkness?" He said, "I do not wish for my house to be next to the mosque." His words reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who asked him what he meant by that. He replied, "O Messenger of Allah, I intended that my steps to and from the mosque would be written as a reward for me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Allah has given you all that you hoped for. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has given you all that you hoped for." [367]
Illiyyīn: It means a register in which the names of the righteous are written, above the seventh heaven, or a station of high rank. [368]
As long as one of you remains in the place where he prayed, without harming anyone and without losing his ablution, the angels pray for him: 'O Lord, forgive him; O Lord, accept his repentance; O Lord, have mercy on him.'" [369]
Abu Dawud said: In this hadith, Abdul Wahid ibn Ziyad said that the prayer performed in the open is many times superior to the prayer performed in congregation. Abdul Wahid narrated the hadith. [370]
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Give glad tidings of a perfect light on the Day of Resurrection to those who walk to the mosques in the darkness." [371]
