297 – From ʿAdiyy ibn Thābit (may Allah be pleased with him): He from his father Ṣāliḥ, and he from his grandfather, that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Women with chronic bleeding (mustahāda) leave off prayer during their menstruation, then when it ends, they perform ghusl (ritual bath), perform their prayer, and take ablution (wudu) for every prayer time." [226]

EXPLANATION

The grandfather of ʿAdiyy ibn Thābit is Dīnār. ʿAdiyy ibn Thābit narrated the hadith of istiḥāḍa (chronic bleeding) from his father, and he from his grandfather, as well as the hadith regarding sneezing, drowsiness, and yawning in prayer being from Satan. However, there is disagreement as to whether the name of ʿAdiyy’s grandfather is Dīnār or not. Some have said that Dīnār is the maternal grandfather of ʿAdiyy, but his mother’s father is ʿAbdullāh ibn Yazīd al-Ḥatmī, not Dīnār, and this has been objected to. Some have said that the name of ʿAdiyy’s grandfather is not known. In summary, if it is accepted that Dīnār is the grandfather of ʿAdiyy, then his narration from his grandfather is considered mursal (a hadith with a missing link). 298 – From ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her): Fāṭima bint Abū Hubaysh came to the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him), and ʿUrwa mentioned the report of Fāṭima. The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "After your menstruation ends, perform ghusl, then take ablution (wudu) for every prayer, and perform your prayer." [227]

300 – From ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her), from the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) – A similar narration is reported. Abū Dāwūd said: The hadith of ʿAdiyy ibn Thābit, the hadith which al-Aʿmash narrated from Ḥabīb, and the hadiths which Ayyūb Abū’l-ʿAlāʾ narrated from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her), all of these are weak. They are not authentic. The weakness of the hadith which al-Aʿmash narrated from Ḥabīb is indicated by this (previous) hadith. Ḥafṣ ibn Ghiyāth narrated it from al-Aʿmash as mawqūf (stopped at the Companion), thus rejecting that Ḥabīb’s hadith is marfūʿ (attributed to the Prophet). Likewise, Asbāṭ narrated it from al-Aʿmash as mawqūf from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her). Again, Abū Dāwūd said: Ibn Dāwūd narrated this hadith from al-Aʿmash as marfūʿ at first, and in the hadith he denied the presence of ablution at every prayer time. This indicates the weakness of Ḥabīb’s hadith. In the narration of al-Zuhrī from ʿUrwa, from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her), regarding the mustaḥāḍa (woman with chronic bleeding), ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "She would perform ghusl for every prayer time." In the narration of Kumayr from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her): "She would take ablution (wudu) for every prayer." In the narration of ʿĀṣim from al-Shaʿbī, from Kumayr, from ʿĀʾisha (may Allah be pleased with her): "A woman with istiḥāḍa would perform ghusl once every day." Hishām ibn ʿUrwa narrated from his father: "A woman with istiḥāḍa takes ablution for every prayer." All of these hadiths are weak, except for the hadith narrated by ʿAmmār, the freedman of Banū Hāshim, and the hadith narrated by Hishām ibn ʿUrwa from his father. The well-known narration from Ibn ʿAbbās is that of ghusl.
